Cops to do more in festive season

2010-11-01 19:14

Johannesburg - National police commissioner General Bheki Cele on Monday urged officers to "go the extra mile" to protect South Africans during the festive season.

"(For) police officials, this is one of our busiest periods, when we have to leave our families and dedicate our time to keeping our communities, especially our women and children, safe," Cele said at the police training institution in Pretoria, according to a statement.

"During the 2010 Fifa World Cup we proved to the people of our country... that we are one of the best police forces in the world. You, the police officials of South Africa, were regarded as the best of the best, you were excellent ambassadors during the World Cup. Let's keep this high level of professionalism up and make this the best festive season ever."

The police had already begun crime prevention operations across the country to make sure citizens and tourists would enjoy a safer festive season.

Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa and Cele would on Thursday formally launch the "Safer Festive Season" campaign in Soweto.
