Johannesburg - Gauteng police would on Monday follow up on a report of a stabbing at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto at the weekend, a spokesperson said.

Captain Nondumiso Matlou-Mtetho said police heard the report on Sunday and went to the hospital to investigate.

"There was a report of a stabbing but the matron at the hospital said that the complainants were not available," she said.

"The police will return to the hospital later today [Monday] to follow up. So far no case was opened because the police haven't obtained a formal complaint."

On Sunday, the Democratic Alliance said an intern doctor and four patients were stabbed at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Saturday night.

"The DA is shocked at the stabbing of patients and an intern by another patient at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Saturday evening," spokesman Jack Bloom said at the time.

"There must be a full inquiry. We spend more than R20m a year on security at this hospital, yet the safety of patients and staff is still at risk."

Matlou-Mtetho said police did not have the actual number of people who were stabbed.
