Cops turn up heat on Mahikeng drug gang

2011-08-11 17:37

Johannesburg - Nine men were arrested in connection with a drug syndicate in Mahikeng on Thursday, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said eight men were arrested in Mahikeng, and the "kingpin" in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

The arrests followed an operation started by the Hawks in 2010, after they identified a drug problem in Mahikeng and surrounding areas.

"These drugs found their way from Johannesburg, through the Zeerust and Mahikeng areas."

The men, aged between 26 and 42, were arrested for drug dealing early on Thursday morning. The first man was arrested in Hillbrow and the other eight later in Danville and Golfview.

Police allegedly found dagga, Mandrax and cocaine with a street value of R9 000 in their possession. Four cars were also confiscated.

One man had R3 400 cash with him. Another had plastic containers with coins and bank deposit slips. The highest deposit was for R48 000.

The men were expected to appear in the Molopo Magistrate's Court on Friday.
