Cops watching Free State protest

2012-05-21 17:49

Johannesburg - Free State police were keeping watch on a protest near Zastron on Monday afternoon.

Captain Harry Nagel said there was a strong police presence since the protest turned violent last week.

"Municipal buildings have been set alight because residents were unhappy because they had not been receiving any feedback from the municipality about their concerns."

He said about a hundred people protested. "Residents accused the Mohokare municipality of tender irregularities, nepotism and a failure to award them jobs through Operation Hlasela projects."

Nagel said no arrests had been made and the situation was calm.

The manager of the Mohokare municipality was not available for comment.
