Kinross - A Mpumalanga detective's super sleuthwork has put a woman and three hitmen behind bars for the murder of her husband.

Constable Jimmy Malele's work resulted in the four culprits being handed life sentences in the Secunda circuit of the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday.

“This is the first time that a case I was investigating ended with a life sentence," Malele told African Eye News Service.

He said he was very happy that justice was served.

Selinah Patience Hlalele, 40, Kopolo Lebese, 27, Molahleli Makele, 30, and Thapelo Thamae, 36, were found guilty of conspiring to kill Jeremiah Hlalele, 48.

Hlalele was murdered at his home in Kinross on 6 May 2012, at about 22:00 when three men arrived pretending to want to borrow his car. Instead, they stabbed him to death.

Hlalele was looking after his three children after his wife left them.

They were not home at the time, but returned to find him in a pool of blood.

Malele said that it took him almost three to four hours to interview each child.

"It was written on their faces that they knew something about the death of their father. I managed to crack all the important information which led to the life sentencing,” he said.

He said he was lucky to have been on standby on the night of the murder because he was able to go the scene immediately and capture everything he needed to ensure a conviction.

Constable Malele joined the police service in 2005 and became an investigating officer in 2009.

Kinross police station spokesperson Constable Esther Nhlapo was full of praise for her colleague.

"Constable Malele thoroughly investigated the case and ensured that the courts are able to use the evidence against the culprits," she said.
