Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers died and a policeman was wounded in a shoot-out in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, on Monday, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said three armed men entered the garden of a house in Lenasia just after 08:00.

"The owner of the house spotted them and locked himself inside the house. He pressed the panic button and the security company and the police responded."

A shoot-out between the police and the robbers ensued. One of the men was shot dead. The other two jumped over a wall in a bid to get away, and one of them was cornered in a neighbouring yard.

"The man shot himself dead upon realising that he was surrounded by police and had nowhere to go."

The third man was caught and arrested. The wounded policeman was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
