Corrupt cop gets 5-yr jail sentence

2012-03-29 10:39

Johannesburg - A former police captain who was filmed in 2008 taking R100 and a live sheep as a bribe, has been sentenced to five years in jail by the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court, Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.

Captain Richard Stevens Makhene, 54, on Wednesday received a seven-year sentence, of which two years were suspended.

Magistrate Ben van Schalkwyk also denied Makhene leave to appeal. He was head of the Hammanskraal police station's crime prevention unit when a Carte Blanche television crew filmed the bribe with a hidden camera.

The footage was later used as evidence in court, to back up testimony by Stephen Smith, who testified that Makhene and four policemen had pulled his bakkie off the road and discovered that three of the workers in the vehicle were illegal immigrants.

Makhene informed Smith it was a crime to employ illegal immigrants, and that he would probably have to pay a R25 000 fine.

Smith said he didn't have "that kind of money", and Makhene offered to drop the case for R10 000.

Smith then offered him R100 and a live sheep, which Makhene accepted. There was no room for the sheep in the police car's boot, so Makhene and his colleagues put it on the back seat.

what about the other four officers, surely they were also involved Norman

They probably were, but then they probably gave a cut to Zuma. You're only protected if you "pay your taxes"... haven't you watched The Soprano's??

And what happens to Stephen Smith? He gets aways scots free? Surely if you go through red traffick lights and you bride your way out it doesn't negate the fact that you went through the red lights. He employed illegal imigrants and offered or accepted an offer to bribe the cops. Surely the magistrate should ask such things and pin this guy against the wall as well. What stops this guy from bribing another cop and he keeps contravening the law simply because he reported the bribery.

Michael, you are right. Stephen Smith will try the same trick of trying to bribe his way out and then blow the whistle and go scot free as a witness. Makhene had a lousy lawyer!

The other officers should get some punishment too even the guy who paid the bribe.

poor fellow my sympathy to his family

  • Andre - 2012-03-29 11:07

Why did it tale 4 years to get the conviction. Us normal citizens are convicted within 2 hearings!

  • NrGx - 2012-03-29 11:10

while Im all for the punishment for corrupt cops, I think this is a bit harsh. I presume this guy has no connections within the anc, because if he did, he would just be suspended (with full pay), pending a "probe", the same the ones who fraudulently acquire money in the millions. There is NO CONSISTENCY in our judiciary!

    stealing from the bosses.

    NICELY DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ang - 2012-03-29 11:34

They should have taken a pig not a sheep. A pig getting into a police car would not have been noticed... even on film.

I am popping champagne not to celebrate someone going to prison, but Justice.

  • Konapi - 2012-03-29 11:59

Sheep & R100 it sounds like a joke.....they should have sentence him 10 yrs so that he can learn.

  • Ze Don - 2012-03-29 12:12

How can such a clear cut case take four years to complete? No wonder our courts & prisons are in such a state!
