Corrupt cop to stay behind bars

2011-12-22 22:46

Johannesburg - An Ekurhuleni metro police officer will spend Christmas behind bars after the Brakpan Magistrate's Court denied him bail on Thursday, the Gauteng community safety department said.

Patrick Shongwe, 38, cluster commander of the Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD), was arrested on charges of corruption earlier this week, spokesperson Thapelo Moiloa said.

He allegedly threatened motorists with arrest, unlawfully impounded vehicles, extorted money from motorists, and confiscated goods from street vendors.

Shongwe was the second EMPD officer arrested for corruption in December. Rolsten Pillay was arrested earlier this month following a tip-off. Moiloa said Pillay approached them for a plea bargain deal.

"He said he will provide us with more information on more people involved, if we have mercy on him. We investigated his claims and it led to the arrest of Shongwe.

"We believe that they operated as part of a syndicate... .So more arrests are imminent."

Yet another Metro cop running true to form - just what we have come to expect from these useless wankers. I just wish they would drop the word 'police' from the organisation - just doesn't fit, bit like an oxymoron.

Thug -slap him silly. Throw the book at him. For once the judiciary is doing its job and keeping thugs behind bars with no bail. 25 years sounds good

Is it true that Selebi is being released on medical parole??

  • Malcolm - 2011-12-23 07:30

20 odd years ago, we had a healthy respect for the police. Yet in just a few years, we’ve become immune to the utterly disgraceful behaviour from those in authority and rightly mistrust their every action.

Two incidents happened recently where motorists are intimidated and either relieved of valuebles or locked up and their cars then stripped by police. This happened in Sandton after 11pm and motorists driving after drinking alcohol. Cops utilise this fact to their own benefit. Rape is also a possibility , as we know. Bottomline , dont drink and drive and give these guys ammunition to rip you off or worse.

something really need to be done about this. The very people who are surposed to protect us are robbing us. Two police officer locked me up and took my car saying it was a suspected stolen one. He even opposed bail for me whereas he never had any evidence to suspect the car was stolen. After 3weeks i was given bail later the charges dropped. The worst is my car was stripped iam shocked why the police do this. I dont have any trust in the police anymore they are worse than the thugs. I reported my case at a nearby police station only to be told after a few days that they cant get any suspects or leads and closed my case. What kind of world is this?
