Cosatu condemns child neglect

Johannesburg - An increase in children's deaths due to neglect in the North West is worrying, the provincial Congress of SA Trade Unions said on Monday.

North West secretary Solly Phetoe condemned the most recent deaths of two children in Wolmaransstad and Zeerust on Wednesday.

An 11-month-old baby drowned in a bucket used as a chamber pot, while a 2-year-old drowned in a bucket of water that had been used for washing laundry.

"In our view this is pure neglect and we call on parents not to let their children go out of their sight."

He said authorities should investigate the reason for mothers leaving their children unattended.

Child neglect is a crime and there must be strict measures taken against mothers do such things and victims taken into a safer place. How many children died so far or burnt due to being neglected?? Urging mothers is just not enough, a jail term should be considered.

2 weeks ago my husband was driving to work and noticed cars infront of him swerving. They were trying to avoid hitting a little girl who was crossing a very busy intersection near Paddocks, CT. He stopped and another lady also stopped to talk to her. He ended up taking her to the Milnerton police station where she was seen to by a very nice lady. He says the little girl was very traumatized, shivering from the cold and couldn't answer any questions. She must have been about 3 years old. Honestly, I don't know why people have children if they wont be able to look after them. I don't want to speculate because she could have been abducted and dumped near the intersection or she could have been neglected. People need to be educated about the fact that contraceptives and condoms are free!!!

I am under the impression that society and organisations such as this are very quick to call for harsher measures when mothers harm their offspring. This is the stuff of newspaper headlines. But every single say hundreds and thousands of women and children are abused and raped by men. Does Cosatu condemn this? Does it condemn fathers who fail to provide financial ad emotional support for the raising of their children? I may be wrong, but my impression is that women receive much harsher fare from society and the justice system than men. I guess we are just not accustomed to women doing awful things. Now, in a world rendered so unsafe that I am loathe to let my child play unaccompanied in the back garden, let us also direct our attention and efforts against women's neglect. That's the really big issue here, Cosatu ... isn't it?
