Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Thursday welcomed the sentences imposed on Boeremag members convicted of high treason.

"The federation congratulates investigators and prosecutors, who brought these individuals to justice and put them in jail where they belong," Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria handed down sentences ranging from five to 48 years to various Boeremag members.

The 10-year-long treason trial followed a far-rightwing coup plot in the early 2000s to violently overthrow the ANC-led government.

The plotters planned to chase non-whites out of the country and replace the government with military Boer leadership.

"Let us never forget the appalling fate that would have awaited us if these racist thugs had succeeded in their evil plans, and re-commit ourselves to the struggle to defend our non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and peaceful society," said Craven.
