Johannesburg - Johannesburg ANC Councillor Nokuthula Xaba owes the Gauteng health department over R7 000 in rent, the DA said on Wednesday.

"She lived rent-free for nine months at the nurses' residence, and still refuses to pay her outstanding rent," DA spokesperson Jack Bloom said in a statement.

The monthly rent was R809.

Bloom said this information was disclosed by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo on Tuesday in reply to questions in the Gauteng legislature.

Xaba previously worked as a nurse, but resigned to take up the councillor position.

Bloom said this was because elected representatives were not allowed to work for the state.

The property where she resided was a home for nurses.

Xaba was evicted from the Hospital Street property in November last year.

The Gauteng health department confirmed that it sent Xaba a letter demanding payment for her outstanding rent.

Xaba could not immediately be reached for a comment.
