Johannesburg - Police have procured 1 385 new vehicles for use in rural areas, the ministry of police said on Friday.
"The vehicles range from high-powered 4x4s to high-tech equipped vans and sedans," said Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa in a statement.
He said rural areas where the vehicles would be used would include not just farms, but remote areas which did not even have proper road infrastructure.
"One of the focus areas will be around provision of adequate police transport in these areas."
He said research conducted by the police indicated that police visibility - whether through police officials or vehicles moving around certain areas - acted as a deterrent against crime.
"We are now beginning to deploy our resources evenly and effectively and this is our new way of doing things, innovatively and speedily."
