Couple ambushed on highway

2012-02-23 10:22

Johannesburg - A Randfontein couple has been ambushed on Johannesburg's Golden Highway, according to a newspaper report on Thursday.

Pierre and Marietjie le Clus were travelling to Mozambique on Wednesday, but had to pull over when one of their tyres was damaged by one of several large rocks barricading the road, Beeld reported.

When Pierre le Clus got out to change the tyre, two men attacked him, beating him over the head with a rock and his own wheel spanner.

His wife locked herself in the car and unsuccessfully tried to call the police.

The attackers fled when a passing security vehicle stopped to investigate.

Pierre le Clus was taken to hospital where he received stitches to his head. He was later discharged.

This sitaution of placing rocks on the golden highway has gone on for far too long, c'mon guys - be it the government or residents who use this area - surely there must be somehting you can do??

      Ian - 2012-02-23 10:53

And the 'governments' answer to this problem......put up a 'Hijacking hotspot' sign!

      Thando - 2012-02-23 11:04

I first heard of this stunt in 1999 and yet it still happens.

      MandrewZA - 2012-02-23 11:30

If you see any obstacles in the road, report it at www.drivelikeachop.co.za That way we can at least warn each other.

      John - 2012-02-23 16:40

Our justice system and police system clearly cannot control our crime levels. It is now time for vigilantism, we need to take the law into our own hands and shoot criminals on sight

      brendan.beech - 2012-02-23 16:54

this is very "old south africa" innit?

      ChatterBox - 2012-02-24 11:33

Yep the government is doing someting - they sitting on their asses ....

  • Christina - 2012-02-23 10:34

but why? why beat any person without reason. demons on loose.

      Vaal-Donkie - 2012-02-23 13:36

      It's because they're hungry.

      Silvana - 2012-02-23 14:06

@Vaal Donkie. Hungry for what? Blood or padkos? Poverty does not entitle you to commit crime - ever.

      des.maartens - 2012-02-23 16:52

The reason for beating these "persons" is clearly because the couple was ambushed and the husband beaten up. Thats enough reason for me.

      Joe - 2012-02-24 02:33

C'mon people - can't you pick up sarcasm (from Vaal-Donkie) when you see it? Loosen up!

These useless thugs need a bullet.

      TheJaydedKing - 2012-02-23 11:58

yup, and it will likely be that some guy shoots them and then the news headline will be "motorist shoots migrant labourers".

  • John - 2012-02-23 10:41

Double bells for the passing security vehicle! Pierre and Marietjie ...god knows what we will be reading here if those security guys were not on this route. Changing tires on the SA roads must be clasified as extreme sport activity with high probabilty of dead....what a country we live in.

  • craig.odonoghue - 2012-02-23 10:42

The same thing happened to me WAY back in 1997! Even then the cops did F-all! Why should they. There's nothing in it for them.

  • Michael - 2012-02-23 10:48

what happened to normal jacking?, thugs asks for something, you hand it over, thugs flee.

      reynard.j.debeer - 2012-02-23 14:08

Desperation I'd say...yet still no excuse for this or any other crime!

      Penny - 2012-02-23 22:11

@ rokitScience.. according to a report I read, most criminals have actually left paying jobs to take up crime because the financial returns are better and the risk of being caught is pretty low and if caught the risk of being punished is even lower.. something like 7 years of crime on average before being caught! The desperate people may turn to a little petty crime for a bite to eat, but mostly they just hang around being desperate.

  • Garth - 2012-02-23 11:05

Well done anc. Another feather in your cap.

  • Marion - 2012-02-23 11:12

Sincere sympathy to you guys for this horrific experience. Years ago when we lived at a sawmill 120kms from the nearest town, we went to town and got a flat on the way back. Put the spare on. Later that day I had to go back to the nearest town, with my toddler in the car, and in the middle of nowhere got a 2nd flat tyre. There and then I decided to hell with the rims etc., I would drive the car slowly until I could get to a place of safety. Crawled along at snails pace, but kept moving until eventually someone I knew came along and assisted me by fetching a new tyre. I would have driven that car into the ground rather than sit in the middle of nowhere with my son in the car. I would do the same today.

  • Dylan - 2012-02-23 11:13

  • Jeffrey - 2012-02-23 11:16

Stop complaining. The government assures us that crime is dropping in South Africa.

      Jacqueline - 2012-02-23 18:11

And you trust the government why exactly? Is the corruption enforcing your support? The escalating food and petrol prices maybe a sign of a successful government? The farm attacks might be growing pains of a evolving government? Wake up and get your head out of your butt!

      Penny - 2012-02-23 22:13

Yes, crime is dropping... dropping luxury items into our politicians laps!!

  • Hazel - 2012-02-23 11:22

  • Victor - 2012-02-23 11:22

    Give them a lead pill.

  • Bokfan - 2012-02-23 11:46

How is it possible that one can 'unsuccessfully" call the police. It more like the police were "unsuccessful" in their primary duty. general failure = typical anc.

      Pieter - 2012-02-24 08:07

I have once been witness to a horrific accident - and was unable to call the police, as no-one picked up 10111... that in my opinion would classify as unsuccessfully calling the police. lucky for the injured an ambulance happended to pass by within one minute...

  • Nigel - 2012-02-23 11:55

Get Chuck Norris to run into a stone and have to pull over - when he gets out and is attacked, Chuck can do his thing and ensure that it's the last time those bastards put anything, anywhere. Alternatively, any armed SA citizen could do the same. . Take these bastards on, head on.

  • Allan - 2012-02-23 11:57

Perhaps it is time to blow new life into the "Highway Action Group" which was instrumental in stopping the "boulder" attacks on the N1 South in 2004. See the Carte-blanch article on this link http://beta.mnet.co.za/carteblanche/Article.aspx?Id=2467 These attacks were traced to gangs operating in the area who were using members of the police to delay reaction time thus allowing them the opportunity to complete the attacks. Worth looking at?

  • rory.short1 - 2012-02-23 12:03

Very few, if any people, are born as criminals so what is it that we are doing wrong in our country with the consequence that we rear so many criminals?

      David - 2012-02-23 12:28

They see the news and read articles of how their parents and older siblings Strike and dance, if they dont get their way, they to are the ones that should be put in jail, as they are also a bunch of criminals. Then they think they can commit crime and get away with it.

      trishawebbheywood - 2012-02-23 21:13

Rory - too many people. The government pays people to have more babies (Allpay) instead of promoting contraception. Most thugs are bored, jobless, and resentful.

country...did you forget to take your meds.

  • Patsy - 2012-02-23 12:18

This continent - Africa - has gone to the dogs. There is no safety for anyone, anywhere. High walls, burglar proofed windows etc., electric fencing, big dogs and all the rest are no protection. We are at the mercy of criminals in one field or another

      Michael - 2012-02-23 15:36

I disagree! This stuff doesnt happen in other African countries. poverty yes, not crime on such a level.

      John - 2012-02-23 16:48

I agree Michael - no other African country that I have been to, has got the levels of crime that we have.

  • Ntuthuko - 2012-02-23 12:56

I also have suffered from this, not on the same road. I was travelling at night in a township in KZN, I also ran over rocks that were placed on the street. But Instead of fixing my tyres. I got off the car and chased the guys since I saw them approaching as I was bring my vehicle to stop. Silly because I did not have anything to defend myself just my fiest. Surely something must be done as this costed me R3000 to fix my suspension inclunging replacing the tyres.

      reynard.j.debeer - 2012-02-23 14:12

You lucky mate! Coulda bee alot worse...

Sorry bru. I broke down and got stabbed 30 times and consequently lost my business, my home, my car, my marriage and my medical aid. My son was born in a govt hospital just after that, as I had no money, and they were negligent and he is blind and severely disabled. All because some lazy, good for nothing scum bags - choose to steal, rather than work.

      myfriendshane - 2012-02-23 15:33

and my pension and all my savings and everything else as a result. But almost 10 years later, I am back on my feet. Living in pain for 10 years almost drove me to suicide, but screw that. The only thing stopping us from "making it" in life is ourselves.

Treat Africans with respect if you are expecting to receive UBUNTU. Only if this sort of things were happening to news24 loyalists.

      Koos - 2012-02-23 13:49

UBUNTU died a long time ago TANIE. I have photo's.

      reynard.j.debeer - 2012-02-23 14:13

      Treat everyone with respect!!!

      Silvana - 2012-02-23 14:20

@Tanie Sariekie This is not the first time I've read a random asinine posting from you. Is it the drink, drugs, glue or are you just plain mentally challenged? How is is possible for anyone to treat YOU with respect?

      Schmee - 2012-02-23 15:03

That's a bit harsh Silvana. Did you forget to take your Prozac?

      Garth - 2012-02-23 16:18

When white fools like you, born in this country, on this continent, cease and desist from naming yourself as Europeans, then ubuntu will follow. If you were born here, then you are an African, no matter what skin tone you possess.

      Gail - 2012-02-23 17:32

Tanie - respect is earned, not a free handout!!! Want respect, a roof over your head, clothes on your back etc.....earn it.

      Jeffrey - 2012-02-23 21:43

Ubuntu is a figment of South African blacks imagination.

  • Ron - 2012-02-23 13:46

This is the government's fault - they do NOT have the People's mandate to turn a blind eye to crime! Firkin' incompetent idiots! Even the Apartheid regime was better than the ANC - and that's saying something!

      Lulama - 2012-02-23 13:55

Seriously Ron? Apartheid was an inhumane regime that we should never see in this country again. But then back to the matter at hand. It's really terrible what happened to these people and those thugs need to pay for their crime.

      reynard.j.debeer - 2012-02-23 14:16

Apartheid was not better, and how could you even say that, better for who? But yes noted is that crime rates where lower, or at least that was what information was published! Safricans need to work together to fight crime, as a comunit, as a country its US and the criminals - as crime is colour blind!

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 15:28

Ja ja ja. Apartheid was better was better because we lived in heaven. Anything Black was a criminal, including unarmed School children, Torture them put bags in their heads and kicked them in the balls in front of their children. Do you think statements like yourselves will ever contribute in bringing change in this country? Do think that you can oppose ANC successfully when you talk like this? I don't think so Black people are the majority in this country and statements like this ensure them that Big brother ApartHATE is still breathing and I assure you it will take a million years to convince a black person to Vote for a white person so long U keep making these Utterances. Thanx Ron for reminding us that there was actually a military state in this country, I'm sure you reminiscing of the good old days

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 15:51

      And that's saying nothing!!!

      Elize - 2012-02-23 16:21

@Bahle Mathe: I think you need to read the statement in line with the article, i.e. regime was BETTER for fighting crime (not so out of control) during Apartheid as it is now. It should not be read as white vs black! It should be criminals (all races) vs non-criminals (ALL races)!

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 16:39

Elize I know crime affects all races equally I live in the Township a day doesn't pass without news of a shocking incident, from Rape to Murder. But to say apartheid Police system was better is just pure ignorance from my angle maybe from yours(which will be selfish). Some of us have no parents, brothers or sisters who perished at the hands of Apartheid police. I don't care what Angle you look at it, APARTHEID was evil, it still is and always will be

      Gail - 2012-02-23 16:56

@ Elize in response to Bathe What you are saying is actually not true since the press were muzzled and there was some pretty awful state crime happening. What crime from the township was reported was always black on Black crime. What happened during apartheid was that we as whites were forbidden freedom of access to black areas and so very few people really knew what WAS happening there. There has always been black violence, the difference is that those who were previously forced to prey on their own now have freedom to strike where they may. The perpetrators of crime now roam free and generally unpunished and striking cars and such is because there is no public transport.

  • Mohsin - 2012-02-23 13:58

Teach every child or person how to defend himself/herself. We must all be aware and awake when we are travelling. It is not just in South Africa that these things are happening. There are also good things happening here but we never read it.

  • Sean - 2012-02-23 14:47

Vigilante justice will soon be the order of the day - If the powers that be cant protect the people, then the people will protect themselves!!!And the public have no qualms about the death penalty

  • Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 16:18

Its very funny when someone says ApartHAte was better. You don't need to take a guess of their Race. We are living in Heaven, police protect us and shoot everyone else in the head including school children. A black person is a criminal until proven otherwise. Police must Torture them, put bags on their heads, put wires on their balls and turn on electricity. I like it when you remind me of the good old inferior days, when I couldn't move an inch without your consent, when my father took of his hat each time he saw you and called you BOSS without paying him, Yet you surprised when I'm not ready to trust a white leader no matter how Genuine he appears Because Deep down he wants to bring the Rope back and hang me. I am the majority I have a right to vote now win me then bring back your police state. But I don't see that happening any time soon, I'm not ready to give up my liberty because I just got it.

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 16:28

I should write a book don't you think?

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-23 18:19

Bahle Mathe : Life is too short to carry these thoughts and feelings. Only you, yourself, can liberate yourself from it. You ain't got no liberty yet, brother, and the ones who claim to have given you liberty, are laughing behind your back. Unless of course, you are one of THEM.

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 19:50

I know the saying"let the sleeping dogs lie or bygones be bygones" but that doesn't happen overnight, particularly when the former perpetrator constantly reminds you of the good old days when he was on the driving seat. Nonetheless Mr Maserati I'm a freeman believe me,If Apartheid couldn't destroy me nothing will. I'm not Knew to strife and I will struggle with those trying to build this lovely nation of ours. I forgave transgressions against me, moved on and made something out of my life from absolutely nothing

      Winsome - 2012-02-23 20:22

Get rid of the log on your shoulder and the bitterness in your gut - you have had "freedom" for how many years now - and you are STILL going on and on and on ...........

      Johann Enslin - 2012-02-23 20:23

Bahle, If I were you I'd hate. I'm beginning to understand. I'm guarding my thoughts every day, reminding myself it's always about the individual. You say you have moved on, not if I look at your comments. You make assumptions and they are based on a premise of racism. So please don't play the victim. The ANC and a black majority have been in control of the country for a long time. Both the Nats and the ANC are an affront to individual rights and liberty.

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 21:09

Johann my comment is a response to someone who commented on this story saying " Police department during apartheid was better than current goverment, I don't want to dwell much but I'll tell you that I have moved on question have you accepted that apartheid is over or are you one of those who wish you could reverse the times

      Ali - 2012-02-24 09:40

Well the whole world is living in apartheid, I live in the homeland called south africa, I can not go to Europe or America or any other country without a valid "pass" and I can't just go and work or live there, never mind vote. And all this just because I'm not a citizen of said country. And if I planted bombs in their cities to show how unhappy I am I will be treated as a terrorist and they will shoot me in the head to protect their citizens. Is this right? Or am I part of a struggle because I'm being terribly oppressed? Thoughts?

  • Den - 2012-02-23 16:22

  • Cynthia - 2012-02-23 16:26

How disgusting that you cannot even stop to change a car tyre without being attacked. Like hell crime has decreased! What about all the crime that doesn't make it on News24 or the newspapers? What a terribly scary place our beautiful South Africa has become.

  • Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 17:22

I just passed a scene of crime in a township Taxi Rank, a guy was shot dead in public and the assailant fled, but I guess you won't find it on the News tomorrow, its just Black on Black violence

      Jacqueline - 2012-02-23 18:18

If each and every crime was to be reported in the media, can you imagine the amount of information published. Crime is crime regardless of race and there is no excuse for it.

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 18:58

I agree crime is crime but why selective coverage by the media. If a white person is killed in a botched Robbery in Sandton, that story is likely to get main stream media coverage, same day 5 people suffer the same fate in the hands of the criminals in Soweto n its nowhere on the news. Now is crime in Alex different to a crime in Soweto?

      David - 2012-02-24 08:01

Student pranks get front page coverage, but not murder. Murder is too common.

  • Winsome - 2012-02-23 20:11

"His wife locked herself in the car and unsuccessfully tried to call the police." Thank heaven the security vehicle stopped to help these people! Hope they get over the trauma soon.

  • Johann Enslin - 2012-02-23 20:33

@Bathle, I suggest you look at a few other stories here and rethink your post. Crime is reported...pity your sight and judgement is clouded by racist rhetoric. A racist reply against a racist retort is still racist.

      Bahle Mathe - 2012-02-23 21:25

How convenient that every time we mention our history and our condition its called reverse racism.
