East London - An early morning swoop by detectives from the Commercial Branch of the Hawks saw an East London couple arrested for allegedly defrauding the Twelve Apostles’ Church in Christ at East London of nearly R7 million.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Marais said detectives arrested Zola Maziyana, 46, and his wife Zukiswa Maziyana, 38, at their Sunnyridge home in East London at 07:30 on Tuesday.

"After a lengthy investigation police obtained a warrant of arrest and arrested the couple," he said.

The investigation was led by Captain Lionel Hughes.

"Police have also obtained an order and attached all the couples’ assets and froze all their bank accounts," he said.

The couple appeared East London Magistrate's Court later on Tuesday to face 53 counts of fraud and 123 counts of money laundering.

The case was remanded to Wednesday for a bail application.
