N3 truck accident

A man was killed and another was in a critical condition after a truck carrying chemicals hit a stationary container truck on the N3 southbound near Pinetown.

Pretoria - Two people were killed when their car hit a tree on the R510 between Rustenburg and Northam on Saturday evening, the North West department of public safety said.

"It is alleged that two vehicles were overtaking another vehicle when the driver of a VW Polo...from Manamakgotheng in Moruleng village towards Sandfontein veered to the extreme right of the road and hit a tree," said spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele in a statement.

The driver, a 28-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman, died on the scene.

"Rescue teams had to temporarily close the road and use the jaws-of-life to free the bodies...from the car," said Kgwele.

North West safety MEC Desbo Mohono urged motorists to reduce speeding.
