Durban - A man and his wife were shot dead while trying to flee an armed robbery in the Tongaat area, north of Durban, on Tuesday, police and paramedics said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said five men held up a shop owner as he was about to open his business on Tuesday morning.

A man about to drop off his wife who worked at the store saw what was happening and tried to drive off.

The robbers fired shots at the car, hitting both of them.

Their car was found about a kilometre away in a sugar cane field.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the woman suffered a head wound and was dead when paramedics arrived.

Her husband was still alive, but died of his wounds on the scene.

Zwane said the robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellphone and a firearm.

They fled in a Toyota RunX, which was later found abandoned in Cottonfields, near Verulam.

Police are investigating a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two counts of murder. No arrests had been made.
