Johannesburg - The couple accused of raping a 14-year-old girl have appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday. The pair appeared in court on Wednesday.

Their bail application would begin on March 13, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said.

They were arrested on Monday. The girl and her 9-year-old brother were placed in the woman's custody six years ago.

"The school noticed that the girl was showing signs of abuse and contacted the family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit," Van Rensburg said.

The siblings were taken to a place of safety.

Well there's nowhere on the forms asking whether you're a child-molester - just if you've if ever been convicted of a crime. Secondly, the social workers are so stretched that once a child is placed, only perfunctory visits are made and, in the case of older children, a few calls to the school. After that the authorities leave you alone if things "look good" and the kids are terrorised into ensuring they make it all look good. It's only when outsiders, as in this case, the school, notice something that anything has a chance of coming out.
