Baby, 5 months, murdered in Delmas

2012-05-23 23:09

Cape Town - A police manhunt is underway for the killers of a 5-month-old baby and his caregiver in Delmas, Mpumalanga.

Wiehan Botes and his day mother, Margrietha de Goede, 66, were found murdered earlier on Wednesday after his mother alerted the neighbourhood watch.

Rieta, who had tried for eight years to conceive according to Beeld, raised the alarm after she could not get hold of De Goede to check up on her baby who was sick.

She contacted neighbourhood watch members who broke a window to gain entry to the house.

They found another child crying inside, an 18-month old toddler, but there was no sign of Wiehan or De Goede.

Wiehan's body was found hidden under a bed in the house, while De Goede's body was found in an outside store room.

It's suspected that they may have been strangled.

      Butter - 2012-05-23 23:49

My heart breaks for Rieta Botes. How can these bastards do such a thing to an innocent child?Really.I feel that they must be killed rather than arrested.MY condolences to the family May you find the strength during this very difficult time The LORD is with you...

      Hugh_Influence - 2012-05-24 00:02

Absolutely no words to describe how horrifying this is.

      George - 2012-05-24 04:27

The police know what to do. If they need help they should ask our compatriots in Alexander township how its done. Zuma, where is your tongue now...? Will you be visiting the family, attending the funeral, giving the eulogy?

      jacob.ndlovu.3 - 2012-05-24 05:02

This is terrible, shocking news! My condolences to the family. Bring back the blady death penalty- Simple...these sort of violent crimes will decline and expel Zuma and the ANC and get a competent governemnt to run South Africa because we are heading down the drain with all the crime and organised crime, corruption and wildlife poaching!

      Dries - 2012-05-24 05:47

      Ek beter stilbly....

      carpejugulim - 2012-05-24 06:16

The mind boggles ... just how much damage can a 5 month old baby and a 66 year old woman do to an adult/s who is running on adrenaline. Murdering a baby and a woman is an unforgiveable act of cowardice. Condolences and strength to both the families involved

      Denise - 2012-05-24 06:28

soulless demons do exist, a couple of ways to deal with it.. but unfortunately everything is controlled by the system, who is corrupted. so the problem lies not with man, but at the core of it.. corrupt souls, so lets feed the earth, but if we do start a man hunt on these demons, and kill them, we go to jail? the people must overthrow the system

      Janice - 2012-05-24 07:29

Only someone posessed by the devil himself could do something like this!!! So sorry for the parents.

      rianette.kemp - 2012-05-24 07:15

I agree with you. A mere passing by type attack this wasn't. Why hide both bodies? People that murder to steal are too busy getting their stash to still bother to hide bodies

      Karen - 2012-05-24 07:16

I suspect there's more to this story - why were they killed? Why did the police have to break a window to get access - sounds like the killers might have known these people - how absolutely sad and tragic!

      blipsie - 2012-05-24 09:43

Not really. The gardener is currently the suspect according to E-Nuus last night.

      Andre - 2012-05-24 13:04

The gardener? A suspect? But the gardeners never do anything wrong. They and domestics are always innocent and hardly commit these horrendous crimes. There must be a mistake. South Africa is supposed to be a crime free utopia? Or that is what our government wants the world to believe

  • Martie - 2012-05-23 23:40

Unbelievable. And my waning faith in humanity takes another knock. What sort of person does a thing like that?! I hope it's a madman and not just a callous thief. And I hope the he resists arrest.

      George - 2012-05-24 04:33

The same type that perpetuate white minority genocide with the tacit approval of the government. Young mothers shot in front of their children, old women tortured with irons and their heads bashed in. Day after day, month after month. Year after year. Time for the ICC in the Hague to issue some invitations to our leaders. The BRICS should return to BRIC. SA has become a pariah internationally.

      Koos - 2012-05-24 07:01

George: In reality the rest of the world have their own worries. It does not even feature in our news. When we talk about things like that people look at you like you are crazy.

  • Bokfan - 2012-05-24 00:05

Though we grieve with you Mrs and Mr Botes who can imagine your loss. May baby Wiehan be given the peace in the hereafter that we are all denied in this life. Any thoughts on the subhumans who did this and the consequences I beg will befall them must be kept for another place.

  • Kobus Steyn - 2012-05-24 00:12

So hartseer. My diepste simpatie aan die ouers. Ek hoop die blixems word gevang!!!

  • Jason - 2012-05-24 00:45

While I often get upset about local news, let me just say that this is undoubtedly the most evil and horrific report ever. I pray that God will strengthen the family. I truly have to wonder what we will see next?

      Merven - 2012-05-25 07:26

I won't say it is the most evil report ever. About 2 years ago a 2 month old baby was wrapped in newspapers and set alight in a farm attack. But yes, this do come close.

  • Aletta - 2012-05-24 00:50

My hart gaan uit na die ouers. Ek het nie woorde nie maar trane. Liewe Heer. Ek dra die ouers op na u. Wees in hierdie uur. Minute. Sekondes met hulle. Dra hulle. Maak hulle kalm. Wees u asb. Hul trooster. Amen.

  • Boereroo - 2012-05-24 01:13

I left SA a long time ago. Sometimes I get a bit homesick and follow the SA news to see what's happening. Guess what? Homesickeness cured.

      Michael - 2012-05-24 01:20

      2nd that.

      Koos - 2012-05-24 07:38

Violent crime is not every where. Notice the difference?

      Bibi - 2012-05-24 07:56

@Puse: of course there is crime everywhere. But SA has the highest incidence of violent death and we are not even at war, rape (161 reported everyday), child/baby rape and that is not something to be proud of.

      Msika - 2012-05-24 09:01

@Boereroo, you left SA because it's not good for you, so stop moaning and whining about SA issues. Yes we are the capital rape/murder city of the world, but SA is not the only country where violent crimes are taking place in the world @Koos. If you watch reality TV shows like 72 Hours, Cold Case Files, Snapped, you'll understand that viloent crimes happens all over the world.

      elize.vankerckhoven - 2012-05-24 09:06

Puse so do I, difference is my husband is from belgium so we go there once a year and believe me there is no such s$%t going on there. The reality crime that you watch on tv, how many are robbers that just walk in and rob and kill somebody?? You have NO idea what you are talking about!!!!

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 09:06

puse firstly - how the heck do you pronounce your name!!!! secodnly, what a load of rubbish you speak . please dont try to compare SA with other countries. dont embarrass yourself. i guess you have to try and take comfort in your television shows - somehow you have to convince yourself that the high incidence of granny and infant rape, not to mention murder, torture, robberies and hijackings are nothing unusual? please wake up. your ignorance is yet another embarrassment to your country.

      Boereroo - 2012-05-25 01:27

Puse & Msika. Keep telling yourself the lie over and over again. You're in denial. Trying to find crime somewhere else to justify your own situation. None are so blind as he who doesn't want to see. I have sympathy for those who want to escape but can not. For the rest like you my dear I say this: Open your bloody eyes and mind cos your country is in deep s^&t!

  • Michael - 2012-05-24 01:19

Oh god, bring back the death penalty, actually dont...to corrupt.

Its OK, with people like this you can't make a mistake.

  • shaun.mcneilage - 2012-05-24 01:20

      GeekGurl2000 - 2012-05-24 20:28

Ahem..if there was a hand of god able to cover people with awesome love...then people wouldn't be slaughtered like this. what, was god's watch running 5 minutes too late to extend his hand in time to stop this murder? What about that whole omnipresence / omnicience thing?

  • Maria du Preez - 2012-05-24 03:14

It is absolute EVIL EVIL to hurt an innocent baby ! GOD help and guide his parents thru this heart-breaking time

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-05-24 03:43

Mr Zuma. When are your feet going to touch down on reality, and when will you realize that we have a serious problem in this country. Witch you so blatantly ignore. We want the DEATH PENALTY back. Crimes like this are incomprehensible. And should given the ultimate punishment. Words can not describe the sorrow I feel for those family's. May God guide them through this difficult time.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-24 06:45

Jaysonpaul, This is a horrific story ! But bringing back the death penalty is not going to solve our crime problem. It has been proven over and over again, it is no detergent. The USA is a pretty good example of this. The problem we got is; that if you commit a serious crime, like murder or rape, the chances that you get arrested, charged, convicted and send to prison, is LESS THAN 15 %,( for rape it is even much less!! ) THAT is the problem !! A properly trained, dedicated, non corrupt, police force . is the ONLY way, to get our unacceptable high level of crime down !! In many African countries , crime is on a low level: because if you break the law, you will be caught and send to jail !!!

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-05-24 06:59

Anthony, I appreciate your comment,, but in no way do I agree with you. I don't see why we should give a heartless dirty criminal piece of trash the right to live in a nice warm cell, three meals a day, tv you name it. You live by the sword you should die that way. These people had no regard for life, whatever the reason was. They should be shown no mercy. They didn't show any to that poor innocent child and her care giver. So what ever you say,, will not change my stance on the death penalty. HANG THEM HIGH.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-24 07:13

Jaysonpaul, It is all very well, to satisfy ourselves ,and giving the maximum punishment to thugs who commit horrendoes crimes like this. BUT it does not prevent the next crime like this happenning. Don't you understand ??? It is all ok, to let emotions run high, but it will not solve the problem!! What is the use of having a death penalty, while 8 out of 10 murderers walk freely on the street ??????????????????

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-05-24 07:28

That's where you are so wrong Anthony. It will solve the problem,,the person that we just hung,, won't be walking out on the streets, in say give or take 10 years. To go ahead and commit the same crime. You see,,, they won't be able to because they would have been decommissioned,,, for good. Sorry you still don't change my mind.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-24 07:28

On an emotional level most would agree with Jasonpaul, but for once I agree to some extent with Anthony except for this fact: Many of the bad criminals are repeat offenders. There has to be a permanent solution to keeping them out of society. Rehabilitation does not work for this class of offender and the death penalty would be justified. The real problem is that we will NOT be getting it back and we need to do something within the current laws to deal with this type of scum.

      michael.i.wright - 2012-05-24 08:00

Anthony, there is no death penalty in the USA. They have what would be best described as a "we sentence you to death and then you waste tax money on appeals for 20 years" penalty.A system, screwed up by pink, fluffy liberals, and then held up as a reason why it wont work. Here is a case to illustrate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bonin

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-24 08:05

Squeegee, Sure, one must prevent this type of scum, ever to be able to commit any further crime. But , surely the main focus should be HOW to prevent such a crime . At present, you can have a punishment, of stoning a person to death, and it would not reduce our crime rate! How can it ?? With 8 out of 10 murderers walks freely on the street. And with hardly any rapist at all, been in court !! Our focus should be there.

      Chris - 2012-05-24 08:56

At this point in time I am willing to take my chances on the 2 out of 10 being hung until a better solution is found !

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 09:08

mr zuma is too busy getting his knickers in a knot over his penis being exposed to worry about poor little Wiehan.

      elize.vankerckhoven - 2012-05-24 09:11

Problem in this country is that the cops don't know how to treat a crime scene properly, how on earth are they going to prove half the time who is guilty or not??

      jvzweel - 2012-05-24 15:20

If all murderers and rapists are given the death sentence, we would free up millions of rands of tax payers money in caring for these oxygen thieves. This money could be used to strenghten our dwindling police force to once again catch and bring in more of them to head to the slaughter house. That's why death penalty WILL work. Also, anybody thinking he would get a comfy cell with food, running water and a free tertiary education would think twice about committing these crimes if the penalty was death.

      Mikkel - 2012-05-24 17:36

Anthony - Your mentality saddens me more than the actual article.

I really don't mean this ugly but when the mom appeared on TV last night I wondered if she was the mother and actually thought she can't be she looks so calm!! I was called home one night after my husband and 2 year old was held up at gunpoint, I was hysterical, when the cops eventually arrived 2 hours later I physically started attacking them!! Just a thought!!

      Derek - 2012-05-24 14:28

Exactly! Brett Murray's satirical exhibition was not racism but a reflection on the true state of the government which has all races i.e. Hanekom,Rob Davies, Van Scalkwyk, Pravin Gordin, Manuel etc. None of them ever stand up to be counted about what is going down, despicable, the whole lot

      btabane - 2012-05-24 08:44

ITS NOT JUST WHITE PEOPLE BEING MURDERED ON A DAILY... and you know that in SA, black people know more about mass action than whites do lol, but seriously... this cant be about race any more, a murderer is a murderer, no matter his/her race! and its instances like this one that makes the death penalty relavant to our society! ENUF IS FREAKEN ENOUGH!

      Carla - 2012-05-24 09:36

Presumptions and generalisations get you nowhere. Just makes the situation worse. No one knows yet who committed this atrocious crime. For all we know, it could have been a friend of the family. "you have to realise that incidents such as these do absolutely nothing for nation building - it perpetuates the deep feelings of mistrust...." And immediately making the statement that the killer/s must have been black, does that help nation building?? I don't care about the race of the victims or the perpetrators. I grieve for the innocent baby and his elderly caregiver that were brutally murdered.

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 12:26

moi, i no longer have any reason to build SA as a nation. i left..... i eventually decided to put the welfare and survival of my children above trying to pretend that we are all active and willing participants in a rainbow democracy. you do indded need to acknowledge that the vast majority of these senseless crimes are committed by blacks. if you don't do this, you are failing to recognise the root and cause of the nations' demise. apartheid definitely created social inequalities and was responsible for awful crimes to humanity - i think that most whites are more than prepared to concede this. now it is time for the blacks to start admitting to their continual and relentless contribution.... you cannot be victims forever, you know.....

      Carla - 2012-05-24 12:48

"you do indded need to acknowledge that the vast majority of these senseless crimes are committed by blacks" Seeing as the black population is the majority in SA, that's only common sense. But what difference does it make? "time for the blacks to start admitting to their continual and relentless contribution" It's this type of generalisation that irks and just creates more tension. Just as it's wrong to label all whites as racist, labelling all blacks as criminals is also not warranted. A vast majority of blacks in South Africa are not criminals and strongly condemn the actions of the criminals in the country. We are unable to control the actions of those around us, so we should innoccent bystanders be insulted because people, who just happen to share their skin colour, are criminals?

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 13:44

moi, dont try to excuse the black race groupings criminal tendencies by drawing on the fact that they make up the majority. statistics per 100 people in SA prove that blacks are far more prone to committing criminals acts. and this trend is found in many countries all over the world. on the topic of blacks being in the majorty - you are not simply innocent bystanders. you vote like fools every 4 years and uphold a corrupt, incompetent regime that does nothing to curb all the senseless crime out there. and then you all seem intent on destroying everything in your path in the years between elections - flinging rocks, throwing over dustbins, looting small businesses, burning down trains and schools- the list goes on. i would like to respect you all, but you make it exceedingly difficult. if you want a democracy, then i suggest that you grow the maturity to actively participate and realise that your societal contribution is required. there is only so much that a small tax paying base can support and the rate that you are breaking it down, the time bomb is ticking.....

      Gloria - 2012-05-24 14:47

@ Neels.. Can I help please!

      Carla - 2012-05-25 07:03

"on the topic of blacks being in the majorty - you are not simply innocent bystanders. you vote like fools every 4 years and uphold a corrupt, incompetent regime that does nothing to curb all the senseless crime out there." Not that it matters, but I happen to be white. The sad thing about your "rationalisation" is that you lump all black people together and condemn them all for the actions of some. You have your preconceptions about a group of people and nothing will convince you otherwise.

      Merven - 2012-05-25 07:31

@Moi, not all black people, only those voting for the ANC and PAC.

  • neels.swart.7 - 2012-05-24 06:52

If I get hold of that person I would kill him with a smile on my face things are getting to boiling point white people are being murdered every day and the goverment does not want to bring back the death penalty it is time to force it down mass action

  • Joseph - 2012-05-24 06:56

This is just how it is the stinking church and solidarity will now shut their mouths on this, instead of demanding that the death penanalty comes back, the churches are the worst hipocrates in the world and solidarity follows suite.

  • Raymond - 2012-05-24 06:58

DISGRACEFUL to say the least, more whites murdered. This is what this country is all about.Guess who the killers are.The president will not bringh back the Death Sentence but will rather watch the slaughter continue. But,he know's what he is doing-so do we.

      Puse - 2012-05-24 07:10

Why bring the race into picture? How many black people are murdered in this country and dont get the media coverage? So please before you answer that think about it. Dont let how you feel about blacks overcloud your judgement!

      Carla - 2012-05-24 09:14

keabetwe - May 24, 2012 at 09:08 Report comment Lol, this is really funny!!! Minus 2 how many more to go??!! Eish, they everywer.. It was fun wen u wer killing our grandparent for nothing right? Karma is white bitch!!" What kind of a sick person finds the death of a 5 month old baby amusing?? You should be ashamed of yourself. Pray it never happens to you or one of your loved ones.

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 09:26

puse, why bring race into the picture? if apartheid had a colour it would be 'white'. you would not hesitate to agree with this because it suits you. so, continuing with this line of thought, if crime has a colour, 'black' would be the most appropriate choice. get over it - your race grouping are very prone to criminal behaviour. face it. you read the news. you have no excuse other than your victim mentality.

      Carla - 2012-05-24 09:40

@Keabetwe - ever heard the saying "two wrongs don't make a right"? I'm torn between pitying you and being disgusted by your appalling response.

      Sekalf - 2012-05-24 09:41

keabetw - go and braid your hair - and satisfy some trucker at a truck stop. This is the max your brain is capable of.

      ilzeb - 2012-05-24 12:40

Why make this a racial thing again? This is 1 thing every race, culture, bloodtype etc can agree on...THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE WE ALL DESERVE A COUNTRY WHERE OUR CHILDREN CAN BE SAFE!!!!!!

      Merven - 2012-05-24 14:58

@keabetwe were your family been killed while they were climbing through the white people's windows during a robbery?

  • Charmain - 2012-05-24 07:01

May GOD be with both the families what a sensless crime.

  • Carla - 2012-05-24 07:05

Oh my God!!!! What kind of a monster strangles a 5 months old baby????

  • annaline - 2012-05-24 07:09

This is the saddest news ever...what goes through your mind when you murder a baby...sorry to say but these "monsters" should be killed and not arrested..RIP little angel...and condolences to the parents....

  • Jack - 2012-05-24 07:10

How to cure homesickness? Read News 24

      Koos - 2012-05-24 07:48

Agree 100% Just feel sorry for my family and friends in that forsaken land.

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 09:28

totally agree. moving country is flipping hard, but at least i know my babies are now safe.

  • shalomkatekani - 2012-05-24 07:11

i dnt get why this has been turned to a race issue so infuriating! It doesnt even say da murderers were white or black, evil doesnt hav a race you idiot. And for your information blacks are also murdered in this country DAILY so why act as if only whites are victims of crime agg

      hilton.haley - 2012-05-24 07:15

I'm sorry to say but all south africans need to go on a decency and moral training course and all the homeless people from other countries should go home

      Dorothea - 2012-05-24 09:34

if you dont like the reality then you need to actively change it. whites are certainly not the only victims. but whites are generally the victims of black peoples insatiable need to destroy, rape and plunder everything in their paths. can you not understand how diabolical this is? you live in a country that seems more focussed on protecting a womaniser who has 6 wives and >20 children. i dont live in SA anymore - so i occasionally visit news24 - i am very pleased to no longer be a member of a society that appears to have no self respect. you guys should be hanging your heads in utter shame. WHO or WHAT taught you to rape and murder innocent grannies and infants? and dont tell me that this is the results of apartheid. just dont.

      Rudi - 2012-05-24 16:14

"i am very pleased to no longer be a member of a society that appears to have no self respect. you guys should be hanging your heads in utter shame." So you run away like a little b1tch... Guess you're not part of this society anymore so rather stfu and complain about 1st world things in wherever you took you ass too.

  • Sven - 2012-05-24 07:12

As a farther of a 5month old girl I can't begin to describe my emotions when reading bout this awful crime. My thoughts and prayers Go out to the family.....\evil thrivess when good people do nothing\ its time for the good people of SA to get up and do something.

  • Puse - 2012-05-24 07:16

I dont understand how everything boils down to race everytime a white person is murdered. How many black people are murdered everyday and dont get media coverage? Its sickening that some white people always think of a race. Its sad what happened especially to a poor baby who could not even defend him/herself. Hope the arrest the swine who did the unthinkable.

      Koos - 2012-05-24 07:50

It reminds me of the story about ET's death. The culprits bragged about it and their fellow brothers and sistas did nothing. They did not even call the cops. That is how much you care when someone is murdered.

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 08:04

Its YOU who put the race card here you racist. I see reports on the news everyday of black people getting murdered. Especially children. Get a life and open your eyes. Why don't you ask your dear government why they are battling with pictures rather than battling for the citizens of this country!!!!

      eleanore.hill - 2012-05-24 08:10

Puse, I agree. However its not just one sided. There are culprits on both sides, and they seem to wait and see who puts a foot wrong so that they can make a racial comment. Its becoming a sick competition. Sometimes in life you just need to ignore nasty people with nasty comments, in the end it says much more about them and who they are than you, or other people white, black etc who carries compassion and no hatred towards their fellow man who also struggles against crime and would like to live peacefully. This poor child. May this sick person be caught soon and removed out of society.

      Helen - 2012-05-24 08:51

@Puse - Unfortunately both black and white does this. Just look at the government and Cosatu. They pull the race card on a daily basis.

      Piet - 2012-05-24 09:33

The HARD FACT is that race does play a role in violent crimes - it is 99% of the time blacks committing these horrific tortures, rapes and murders. Go check the stats!

      Merven - 2012-05-25 07:43

@Puse, why do you think the ANC will NEVER allow stats to be published on violent crimes and race?

      Antebellum - 2012-05-25 13:22

@Piet I aggree. I get annoyed when people say "black people are also victims of crime..." The victims are not the problem, the purpetrators are the problem? Who are the pupetrators? Just go look at the stats. http://www.dcs.gov.za/WebStatistics/inmate-gen.aspx

  • Matthew.and.Denise - 2012-05-24 07:17

Where are our ministers now? Not one word from them! Oh wait they are protesting over a painting.....

  • lesego.ntuane - 2012-05-24 07:21

This is shocking to say the least .
