Johannesburg - A court interpreter and a prosecutor at
the Carletonville Magistrate's Court were arrested for allegedly soliciting a
bribe from a suspect on Thursday, the Hawks said.
Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the two approached
a 58-year-old man who was appearing for alleged illegal possession of scrap
metals.
"His case was withdrawn and the interpreter followed
him out of court and said the charges were withdrawn because he had convinced
the magistrate to do so."
They demanded R2 500 from the man.
Ramaloko said the interpreter was accused of soliciting a
bribe from a rape suspect too.
He apparently demanded R2 000 from the man and promised
to have his case withdrawn.
"It was not. That case is continuing," said
Ramaloko.
The two were expected to appear in the Carletonville
Magistrate's Court on Friday facing charges of corruption.
