Court packed as alleged killer cop appears
Johannesburg - Student constable Sipho Mbatha, accused of shooting dead a teenager, appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday.
He will be back in court on February 27 for a bail application.
The State requested the postponement as there was an identity parade still to be conducted.
Mbatha, 41, was arrested on Friday for the murder of 16-year-old Thato Mokoka. He allegedly shot Mokoka at Braamfischerville Phase 2 on Tuesday.
There was a sense of expectation in the courtroom when he emerged from the holding cells.
"It is him," whispered one person in the courtroom when Mbatha stood in the dock.
The courtroom was packed to capacity with residents from Braamfischerville, mostly teenagers.
A court orderly queried several of them about their age, and a 14-year-old-boy was ordered to leave because children under 18 were not allowed to sit in the court.
A group of about 29 teenagers demonstrated outside the court.
