Johannesburg - A 66-year-old man, his wife and dog were stabbed and assaulted by five armed robbers in their Cowies Hill home, in Pinetown, in the early hours of Friday morning during a house robbery, a Durban security company says.

According to the Blue Security company's website, the couple and their dog were attacked around 3.45am in their home in Old Main Road after the robbers forced their way into the driveway gate and through the burglar bars.

Operations manager Brian Jackson said the robbers held the couple up at gunpoint.

"One of the suspects stabbed the resident in his hand and his wife sustained injuries to her head during the attack. The suspect also stabbed their dog behind its ears," Jackson said.

After ransacking the house, the robbers fled the scene in the man's car with laptops, a television and a firearm.

The family was later treated on the scene by paramedics, Jackson said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the attack took place on Friday and said no arrests had yet been made.

A house robbery docket was opened at the Pinetown Police station.
