Crash claims 12
Cape Town - The death toll of a head-on taxi collision outside Laingsburg rose to 12 on Saturday, Western Cape police said.
At least 32 others, including three children, were injured, Warrant Officer Lindikhaya Mkhontwana said.
Their injuries varied from minor to critical. Both drivers were among the dead.
The incident took place about 35km outside Laingsburg after midnight.
The province's Transport MEC Albert Fritz said the accident was a tragedy that was "avoidable".
"Accidents do happen and sometimes it is [a] mechanical failure and beyond the control of the driver. But when reckless decisions claim multiple lives, I am outraged," he said in a statement.
He did not elaborate if this particular accident was due to reckless driving. The cause of the accident was unknown and police were investigating.
