Crash was like horror movie - witness

Mbombela - A witness to the car accidents which claimed the lives of two people and injured four police officers on the N4 outside Mbombela on Sunday evening, has said it was like watching a horror movie.

In the crash, four police officers were struck by a car while attending to an accident in which two people were killed after their bakkie was hit by a truck on the Schoemanskloof Road 30km west of Mbombela.

“It was like watching a horror movie unfolding before my eyes. Everyone was screaming and the injuries were awful,” said Mbombela resident Lasea Swift, who was driving home from Pretoria with her parents and 8-year-old daughter.

Swift said that, after seeing the lights of ambulances at the initial accident scene, she had slowed down for safety reasons and watched in horror as a truck began to lose control in the wet, slippery conditions.

“The truck jack-knifed and slid across the road into the hillside. It bounced off the hill and smashed into a Toyota Yaris just in front of me. The car rolled straight onto the policemen and bounced off and then the truck slid over the officers,” said Swift, who had to reverse to avoid being hit by the vehicles.

Injuries

Swift said that the officers - three men and one woman - sustained various injuries.

“The woman was sitting up but had injuries to her head. One of the men’s legs were completely crushed and the other had what looked like a broken jaw. One guy didn’t move at all and only opened his eyes every now and then,” Swift explained.

The driver of the Toyota Yaris also sustained severe injuries, said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga department of community safety, security and liaison on Monday.

“All five of the injured were rushed to the Nelspruit Medi-Clinic. We suspect that the main cause of the crash was the slippery road conditions, but police are investigating,” said Mmusi.

Nelspruit Medi-Clinic spokesperson Robyn Baard said that three of the patients are receiving intensive care, while the remaining two have been admitted to general wards.
