Johannesburg - The military aircraft that crashed in Mpumalanga was part of the training camp in the Lydenburg area, the SA National Defence Force said on Tuesday.

"The caravan formed part of 41 Squadron that participated in an operations training camp in the vicinity," said spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga.

Three people died and two were injured when the plane crashed in Blystaanhoogte, police said earlier.

The aircraft, which took off from Waterkloof, Pretoria, had five people on board, including two pilots.

Both pilots and a passenger were killed in the crash. Two other passengers were injured.

Mabanga said the injured were in a serious, but stable condition in hospital.

It was not known what caused the accident.

"Preliminary investigation and a board of inquiry will determine the cause of the accident."

The names of the three killed would be released after their families had been informed.
