Crime boss Mdluli's charges withdrawn

2011-12-14 10:31

Pretoria - Fraud and corruption charges against suspended Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli were provisionally withdrawn in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

"These charges... should have never been there in the first place. There is someone fighting with me somewhere. I don't know who," Mdluli said after his brief appearance.

No reason for the withdrawal of the charges was stated in court. The charges related to the purchase of two vehicles for his unit.

In September, Mdluli handed himself in to authorities after fresh charges of fraud and corruption were brought against him.

According to the charge sheet, Mdluli "illegally, dishonestly and without authority carried out some police work, misused or sold information or material acquired during the course of his duties, abused his position of authority, breached the trust of police and tried to conspire with others to commit offences".

Mdluli was alleged to have used money from the unit's witness protection fund to pay salaries and buy houses and cars for girlfriends and their relatives, as well as his own relatives, who had been registered as covert intelligence officers.

In one case, investigators found that a Cape Town woman was registered as an intelligence operative and paid at least R18 000 a month. The woman's cousin and brother were also allegedly employed by crime intelligence and paid R8 000 a month.

The charges against Mdluli's co-accused Hannes Barnard were also withdrawn.

Barnard declined to speak to the media afterwards.

In another case, Mdluli and three others are standing trial for their involvement in a decade-old love triangle murder.

Divine intervention from Zuma and Co? Astonishing that the state coffers are raided day in and day out - yet none of those criminals is brought to book; and more astonishing that the masses do not see it and still vote for them. But the election promise has been fulfilled - "Together We Can Do More - CRIME!"

  • Ben - 2011-12-14 10:58

Guilty or not guilty. It should not be difficult. If not guilty let him go. If guilty send him to China.

Those who use state agencies to settle or gain political scores must be exposed for who they are! I have said it long before that a man of Mdluli's calibre and abilities for fighting crime deserves to be our National Commissioner. Those who were jealous of his ambition cooked up all these charges! The acting commissioner must make way for Mdluli to clean up our intelligence service and police force. I hope that after this case we can focus on beating the dog who came with these charges until his owner comes out to tell us the truth! Amandla!!

  • ludlowdj - 2011-12-14 11:33

The government and police force are the worst enemies this country has, the levels of incompetence as well as corruption at the highest levels can only be stopped by removing the ANC from power as soon as possible and installing a competent government to fairly much start from scratch again, as the 18 years the ANC has spent at the helm guarantee's that the illegal activities have now infiltrated every single department and section in government. As government is in a position to destroy or alter any documentation in its possession, it is now impossible to track or hold them responsible.

  • Dave - 2011-12-14 11:35

Another case of the corrupt, theiving ANC hot shots, right up to the presidency, doing what they like, stealing what they like, with impunity. Pathetic.

  • Abel - 2011-12-14 11:46

      Musa - 2011-12-14 12:47

I guese chief they did not read that section of the article. If they had power they would remove the name of the co-accused. Typical whites!

      Cameronl - 2011-12-14 12:54

did you mean white ppl? oh yeah thought so, whats going through your head while thinking of something clever to write...... eish wat ken i reit, oh yes screw the whites. I will say to you what I said to 'darkie' above, go back to school an get an education stop pulling the race card moron, its becoming a little tattered at the edges from gross over-use, or would you like to google a dictionary instead

  • Mark - 2011-12-14 11:48

  • Darkie - 2011-12-14 13:39

@Cameronl is that the only thing you can do? Throw insults? I raised a valid point and you call me a moron. This really shows your level of education. You're just a white, uneducated and privileged fool. You just like any other white fool choose to ignore the wrong doings of whites.
