Criminals target N2 drivers

2012-06-08 10:33

Cape Town - Western Cape police say criminals are targeting motorists on the N2 highway and it's getting out of control, the Cape Times reported on Friday.

Pat Curran, a traffic officer responsible for the highway stretch from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay, told the newspaper that criminals were sometimes obstructing the road to get drivers to stop.

"We're on the lookout on a daily basis, but we don't know where it will happen next. It becomes a nightmare," he said.

On Sunday, motorist Trevor Rees was driving with his wife back home to Somerset West when he was forced to stop his car because the highway was littered with several large rocks and pieces of concrete.

"I swerved to avoid the largest piece but hit a smaller piece that caused the front right tyre to burst," he said.

"I was then approached by two youths armed with screwdrivers who demanded my phone. I told them I was talking to the police when one of them attacked me, at which time I gave them the phone."

Police confirmed a robbery case was being investigated.

      Sean - 2012-06-08 11:15

Fawk the youth. I will drive these fawkers over, reverse, drive, reverse, drive. Just to make sure that I get the job done properly

      tracey.baard - 2012-06-08 11:19

@poloyatonkim - the report doesn't say exactly where the incident occurred. not the entire n2 is monitored by cameras. these criminals are opportunists, and often create their own opportunity. sneaky buggers.

      tracey.baard - 2012-06-08 11:45

if it means they won't get caught... why won't they?

Polo, of course you will find something to blame the DA for. Why not start blaming your barbaric brothers?.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-08 12:35

Kwizats, the youth are lazy and their adult role models show them stealing is easier than working.

I think Police should be suspicious of the 1 single person who disliked MarkH's comment. Track his computer and you have your suspect, surely!! One of nearly 500 people with an opinion of Marks message.

A friend of mine was attacked while changing a tyre on the R300 between Belhar and Delft

      Nyiks11 - 2012-06-08 12:49

fortunately he ran away with the spanner and 4 nuts, so they couldn't drive away with the car because the flat wheel was still held by one nut which they could not remove even if they wanted the rim.

      Sylvester.Mohloli - 2012-06-08 22:29

Screwdriver = lethal weapon. Therefore ROE = lethal force = blow their brains out.

  • Sydney - 2012-06-08 11:42

Maybe an idea to use a staggered time day/night FLIR equipped drone patrol by Metro police or SAPS over this stretch of road and catch these cruel criminals

  • Loo - 2012-06-08 11:44

Shoot the bastards endangering innocent people's lives

  • pierre.zeeman - 2012-06-08 11:54

It happened to me at exactly the same spot. Between Somerset and the Airport close to Baden Powell. They threatened me with a knife and i had to hand over my phone, laptop, wallet, jacket, ipad, everything. SAPS has to do something urgently. Its getting out of control.

  • Lee - 2012-06-08 12:15

And it's getting better and better isn't it. Just now we will be called a country of bandits and soon they will start on ships coming in and out and we will be called a country of pirates and so it will go on and on unless immediate actions is taken to which is already in the "too late stage" to control.

  • Jacqui - 2012-06-08 12:33

But we are not allowed to have uns. I am getting a bloody screwdriver too, the largest I can get. Maybe the butchers knife we have will find it's way into the car too.

      russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-08 15:21

Try carrying traditional weapons....like a small one handed crossbow. They work pretty well in confined spaces like a car. Nothing like a crossbow bolt aimed at your face to discourage an assailant. You don't have to hit them all...just the threat of being the one to be hit is enough. The bonus is no lisence required and the bolt doesn't leave identifying marks that can be traced back to you. Fire and forget.

My aluminium baseball bat will come in very handy for the kneecaps. Then, when they can't run away, put the concrete blocks on the heads.

  • Ako - 2012-06-08 12:51

These are the kinds of problems ANCYL should be focusing at, unemployment, crime, education and poverty than to promise our youth something that will cripple the economy of this country which will make the current situation even worse.

      Sharon - 2012-06-09 10:38

      these are the ancyl

      peter.g.sibuyi - 2012-06-09 17:24

No, big no. Pls leave ANCYL out of this

  • Richard - 2012-06-08 13:14

Carry a gun at all times, jump out and start blasting. and its legal.

      Nyiks11 - 2012-06-08 15:49

Start by throwing some lead and ask questions last

  • Francois - 2012-06-08 14:59

I'll stop & ask nicely if he (scum) wants to meet a 1911

      Khetha Hlophe - 2012-06-09 15:59

What is 1911 may be I can also show them

      Antin - 2012-06-09 23:15

Yep, even these retards know not to take a screwdriver to a gunfight.

  • russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-08 15:06

So why not simply stop.....reverse out of range and wait to see what happens? When the driver saw the youths approaching why did he not get back in the car and call for help?.....drive away?...even with a flat he could have driven away.

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-08 22:42

@Russel, please do not be so naive, they offer to help, and then rob you! That is how I was hi-jacked, but I learned, now I make them see that I am armed and believe me, they do not come close, they staying out of range. Maybe we can set a trap, one lady pretends to have a flat, we all ready and armed, wait in the grass along the road, when they approach, we get out and just shoot, no questions ask! That will give them the message!

      russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-12 06:24

Not being naive Nicolaas just assumed nobody would be stupid enough to accept help from people who just emerged out of nowhere and especially when it must have been pretty obvious the concrete had been put there deliberately. Considering all the reports of stonings, hijackings and so on and so forth it becomes a bit of a no-brainer to stop under suspicious circumstances and attempt to change a tyre. Far rather drive away as far as possible and then change the tyre. Especially when there's no other traffic and even more especially if you have a female in the car with you. Rather a ruined rim than a lost life? Rather a ruined rim than a raped wife/girlfriend/daughter.

Yes and do not go to the police they will declare the thug a victum andb you the criminal. The best is stay away from where these people stay and do not associate with them. That way you will stay alive longer. \you do not understand their culture. Even a painting of a penis gets them violent.

Why South Africans we are so cruel? Worse of all these criminals after taking all victims belongings they hurt or kill them. If you have gun just shoot to kill don't wait for your dying moment.

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-06-09 10:16

Our gorvenment seems to like what criminals do,because he refuse to bring back death penalty. While innocent people being killed like flies by criminals instead he protect criminals more than victims

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-06-09 10:24

President Zuma please remember your words be you taking your Presidency. You said you will be breing death penalty if we want it. What are you saying today?

      Khetha Hlophe - 2012-06-09 15:52

      Khetha Hlophe - 2012-06-09 15:52

That's the problem Kas old chum the idiots not saying much of anything and doing even less.

      russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-12 06:32

If that is the case, Hlophe why then did RSA not allow the Dalai Lama to visit this country?....Why was his visa rejected?....could it be that the Chinese would have been pissed had he been allowed to visit?....No Khetha RSA respects human rights only as long as it is politically convenient to do so.

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-06-09 10:26

President how must we trust you?

  • dave.ducker.3 - 2012-06-09 11:05

Also don't drive the N2 by Mtubatuba at night either, many many hi jackings there, they take your tyres out then you have to pull over, then all hell breaks lose! Police unfortunately are also totally unless up there and most likely involved.

      kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-06-09 11:31

Yes Dave I agree with you N2 @ Umvoti Plaza is very dangerous I'm the truck driver. These criminals they break truck windows

  • danscholtz123 - 2012-06-09 13:23

Amazing that The N2 stretches from Cape Town to Ermelo in Mpumalanga. Mtubatuba is 1700 km away from Cape Town and you have two parallel situations here --- I shudder to think what else happens on the other stretches of this highway ------ do the cops not get embarresed when they read reports like this?

  • peter.g.sibuyi - 2012-06-09 17:25

A gun vs screwdriver which one is better. As for me I would kill them before I call police

  • zs5zk - 2012-06-09 18:59

It is about time you wake up and carry a Firearm on your Person. Violence deserves violence and that is all that these Criminals understand. Thanks for MOB Violence and Winnie Mandela`s invention, the Burning Tyre for Criminals.

  • Stuart - 2012-06-09 19:31

What is the impact of this continual lawlessness in South Africa. It was my brother who was involved in that incident. It may have been the N2, but the news is here in London. 30 minutes for the cops to arrive...after speaking to them on his mobile??Trying to flag down traffic while the scum try and smash your window with your wife in the car. What message does this failure of enforcement send to tourists like me. We cannot all be armed travelling on N2.

  • Ken - 2012-06-09 21:45

There are also criminals targeting drivers on the Gauteng highways!.....they are called SANRAL!
