Johannesburg - A 17-year-old youth was killed by a crocodile while swimming in Levubu river in the far north of Limpopo, police said on Saturday.
Superintendent Ailwei Mushavhanamadi said that on Friday the teenager and a group of friends were washing their clothes and later decided to swim.
When the crocodile attacked him, members of the public came to the scene and tried to free him, but to no avail.
Nature conservation officials eventually shot the reptile and the teenager's body was recovered.
The incident happened at Muraga village, near Thohoyandou.
Mushanamadi said an inquest docket had been opened.
He urged local people not to swim in rivers.
