Cullinan robber shot dead

2012-06-25 19:22

Johannesburg - A robber has been shot and killed in Cullinan after breaking into a lodge with two other men, police said.

His body was found in a field on Sunday, after the owner of the lodge fired several shots at the fleeing robbers, said police spokesperson Johannes Jaftha.

"The owner came across the three men after receiving a message in the early hours that someone was in the bar of the lodge. He fired at them as they fled."

Jaftha said the owner and his employees waited for dawn to investigate where the men gained entry.

"It was in this process that they recovered a [man's] body," he said.

"An MP3 player and other suspected stolen items, [taken] during a house robbery... committed at a nearby plot on Saturday, was found in his possession."

The man had been linked to a series of house robberies in the area.

Any death is tragic but the right to self defense is paramount. It could easily have been the owner lying dead. When will the government effectively protect the lives of South Africans? This kind of violence is a daily occurrence and not once has the president shown concern for the many victims of senseless crime. The government must resign in shame and let more capable hands take over.

I am sure they would do the honourable thing, but having their arms elbow-deep in government coffers make it hard to write their resignation letters.

What's the bet he gets prosecuted. "Firing a weapon at a retreating figure, no threat to safety, not armed...." blah blah blah. Good riddance and I hope the other two are nailed as well.

Have they identified the robber? Maybe we get lucky and it's malemmer. Shot while trying to accumulate funds to pay his debts.

it's always sad when someone dies, but then again its people like him who instigate all this talk about black people not getting along with Farmers etc. i guess crime really pays and he got paid a bullet today.

Ah shoot a robber got shot and sh@t they are sooooo super rare in SA... Really a very dark day for SA to have lost such a valuable gem... Maybe the lodge owner had an empty wall and needed a trophy for it?!? Oh well, i don't think he will be steeling any time soon again....

  • mike.bester1 - 2012-06-26 07:38

Well done, we are deducting 3 points for missing the other 2, GOOD JOB!

  • michael.barns.1 - 2012-06-26 08:58

what sucks now is that the owner will go to jail... Shooting someone in the back as they flee is by law not considered self-defence as your life was not in danger... ohh well he should have known better, next time drag the body back into the house and put a knife in his hand...then phone the cops.
