Johannesburg - Customers in a Standard Bank branch in Rustenburg were robbed of their possessions on Monday, after four men - intending to rob the bank - could not get to the tellers, police said on Tuesday.
The four men, one of whom was armed, approached the bank's security guard and asked him if he had a pen they could borrow.
They then forced him into the bank, said police spokesperson, Superintendent Lesego Metsi.
"The men tried to break through the glass to the tellers using a hammer, but did not succeed. They then turned on the customers in the bank and robbed them of their possessions," he said.
Police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and armed robbery.
"The men fled in a green Toyota Camry and are still at large," said Metsi.
