Cut off my leg, girl, 8, tells doctor

2012-09-21 09:12

Pretoria - Megan Croucamp may only be 8 years old but this brave little girl told her doctor to go ahead and cut off her leg, which had been the cause of great pain and discomfort to the little girl.

“I told the doctor: Cut it off,” she said on Thursday from her hospital bed at the Steve Biko hospital in Pretoria, reported Beeld.

Megan had become infected with the methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria as a 3-year-old and had battled serious pain, discomfort and close to 17 operations over the past few years.

“All we could do for her was give her pain pills, which later didn’t work anymore,” said Megan’s father, Pieter.

But after the amputation, the little girl said: “I feel better now.”

They would now begin saving for a prosthetic leg.

dougpf, let me tell you this: the message was not for you. if you think what you think, keep to yourself. Idiot

      jonivdw - 2012-09-21 12:36

Doug, you're detracting from a story here... Please this is not your platform... Take it elsewhere or save it for another day! Pretty pretty please just for today can we have something good on News24?

      sean.stretch.3 - 2012-09-21 12:45

wow Doug! do you think this could've happened for a reason and this girl could grow up with a very special outlook on life? and go on to achieve amazing things because of this? life is a very special mysterious thing, why discount what you have no way of knowing? I think you might be the one with a closed mind.

      Cherri - 2012-09-21 13:15

@dougpf - go spread your nastiness somewhere else and stop trying to hijack this thread to get your message across, loser.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-21 14:04

dougpf. What is it with you God haters?. Sour to the bone the lot of you.

How can we help to get this little girl her leg ?

      marinalagrange - 2012-09-21 12:48

PLEASE everyone, help prevent other little girls from losing limbs or lives by using antibiotics correctly! If you take antibiotics for flu, coughs, tummy bugs, acute bronchitis, sniffles, and other viral infections then you are putting health and the lives of others at risk! (And wasting your money, of course.) Educate yourselves for everyone's sake, or you'll be helping to breed more superbugs. http://docfrancois.wordpress.com/2012/09/19/die-gevare-rondom-die-gebruik-van-antibiotika/

      denny.cray - 2012-09-21 13:20

@Inhlanzi - Money where your mouth is please :) Call yourself whatever you will. Megan's Angel Standard Bank Gezina (Pretoria) 0131 42909 Cheque account I've done mine.

I wonder how much of her braveness can be attributed to the coverage we're getting on events like the paralympics. It is showing us that there is no shame in being an amputee. Rather get on with life!

  • minibotes - 2012-09-21 10:45

Brave little girl. A true little fighter. My dad had the same thing and after 2 years of being in hospital and 14 surgeries he told the doctors to amputate. If I think how he fought the bug and the pain he endured I feel for this little girl.

  • zaid.ali.50999 - 2012-09-21 10:48

@dougpf - You clearly indicate that you do not have any direction in life and that you are ignorant. Do you know that the doctor may ask God to help him in treatment off this little girl. Think before you comment, for God as even given people like you brains as well.

  • msard - 2012-09-21 11:05

Courages and strong are the words that come to mind to this Beautiful 8 year old girl from Pretoria. May the Lord God Bless you and give you the strength you so much deserve !

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-09-21 11:16

What a difficult choice to have to make at such a young age. Hope all goes well into the future. Thumbs up to doctors and science.

  • riaan.v.vuuren - 2012-09-21 11:18

Can I make a donation to her new prosthetic leg ? I would like to help.

  • andre.fourie.980 - 2012-09-21 11:25

    Brave little girl.

  • derekgsx - 2012-09-21 11:44

Agree with comments above. Megan you are a very brave girl! We are in the prosthetic business. And we would like to sponsor Megan her first prosthesis. Can anybody forward me the details of the family? Contact Number? So that I can follow up our offer. Here's our website to verify the legitimacy of our offer: http://www.gregvos.co.za/ Furthermore, I would second the initiation of the prosthetic fund for Megan for future expenses. Reason being she is still young and growing, and will require re-fits as time goes along, and as she outgrows her prosthesis. Also, as time goes on and she requires more advanced prosthetic componentry, these too have financial implications.

      jonivdw - 2012-09-21 12:18

Wow what a generous gesture. Should N24 come back to me with the details I'll let you know! Thank you!

      derekgsx - 2012-09-21 12:23

Should anyone get contact details. Please forward to email info@gregvos.co.za? Thanks

      louwc - 2012-09-21 12:34

Good on you for offering the first one free - I would then recommend if the fund is set up that those funds are used with you company for the re-fits as she grows as a sign of apprecition for your donation!!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-21 14:16

Derekgsx. All God's blessings to you. A big heart and a big man go together.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-21 14:25

Derekgsx. I am sure you can contact her parents via the Steve Biko hospital. Thanks again.

  • rlong1952 - 2012-09-21 12:38

What a great kid and some really great people who are offering help. Just wonder about the people giving her the thumbs down (indirectly) and about those who are trying to turn this into a religious debate. Sad people, get a life and do something positive, like contributing some money. It would be great if we could get an account number for a donation.

  • jonivdw - 2012-09-21 12:52

Yay! N24 just mailed me... They're putting up a follow up article now with details of a trust! See your donations in there! Being payday before a long weekend for some of us!
