Cyclist critically injured after being run over by bakkie

A CYCLIST was left in a critical ­condition, lying on his back in the dirt, after he was run over by a bakkie in the Karkloof area yesterday morning.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, a 29-year-old man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after he was knocked off his bicycle on the Cramond Link Road in Karkloof outside Pietermaritzburg.

Before paramedics arrived, local farmers had stopped and aided the cyclist.

“ER24 paramedics found the man ­lying on his back in the middle of the dirt road,” Meiring said.

They examined the cyclist and found that he had sustained a severe injury to his head and required advanced life ­support treatment. The cyclist was treated at the scene before being transported to Grey’s Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The driver of the bakkie did not sustain any injuries.

According to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, the cyclist was on a gravel road when he was approached by a truck, which threw up dust as it passed. Trying to avoid the truck, and with his vision impaired by the dust, the cyclist swerved into the oncoming lane where the collision with the bakkie then took place
