Cape Town - A Cape Town cyclist died when he swerved to avoid traffic and fell under a bus while on his way to work, The Cape Times reported.

The bus driver was unaware of any cyclist while driving in Durbanville on Tuesday morning, Golden Arrow Bus Service spokesperson Bronwen Dyke told the newspaper.

"According to the bus driver, she pulled away and heard a loud bang. She stopped and got out of the bus to find the cyclist under the bus," she was quoted as saying.

Dyke said preliminary investigations showed the cyclist had swerved out to avoid other vehicles and had landed beneath the bus.

The driver had reportedly been suspended until the investigation was complete.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut told The Cape Times a case of culpable homicide had been opened, but that the bus driver had not been charged. He did not release the name of the 31-year-old cyclist, at the request of the family.
