Cyclist hit by car, killed

2012-09-02 07:23

Johannesburg - A man was killed while walking his bicycle on the N12 near Potchefstroom on Saturday evening, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said the details of the accident were unclear but it appeared the man had been pushing his bicycle on the road when he was struck by a vehicle.

"The pedestrian had sustained various fatal injuries and was unfortunately later declared dead at the scene. None of the occupants in the passenger vehicle had sustained any injuries," Visser said.

Police are investigating the accident.

What is this idiot doing on the highway with his bycycle in the 1st place

      WimpieN - 2012-09-02 08:35

Herc, have you ever driven to Potch? It can hardly be called a "highway"! And the poor soul has no other options in any case. Have some respect for the difficulties some people have to face in this country. He was probably an old man trying to cycle to town to go do a piece job for a measly couple of rand an cycling back to his village with a loaf of bread while you are sitting with two cars in your garage, passing crappy comment about his choices in life!! I think you are the idiot....

You have no soul Hercules. If you have, your addiction is clouding your humanity. He was walking the bike, which may also mean it had developed some problem. See, people are going through serious hardships everyday.

      tony.kirby1 - 2012-09-02 11:30

My be he is not the idiot you call him. Maybe he was pushing the bike across the road and misjudged the speed of the approaching car.

Hercules, i beg 2 differ with u, b it high way or on an ordinary road, some motorists dnt respect cyclists n bikers, i dnt own any of the above 2 say m defending them. y do u think de stickers think bike were made? dt was due 2 de fact dt a lot of cyclists loose deir lives as a result of narrow minded drivers, May de dude's soul rest in peace

I stay in Cape Town and there are a lot of cyclists in my area, but a large portion of them dont respect the laws of the road. Cycling 3 a breast, going through red robots, stop streams, on highways, riding in the middle of the road along the barrier line. Now I am sorry I have to be aware of them because they on a bicycle, but not only that I have to forsee that they going to cut in front of me, run a stop street etc. Yes there are some motorists out there that have no respect for anyone on the road besides themselves, but I am starting to think cyclists well at least a large percentage in my area are in the same category. If you say anything to them you get sworn at and give the finger, so yes it really makes me want to think bike!!! Gus please put a light, wear bright clothes when cycling at night! Bottom line respect each other, be more considerate and friendly on the road. //end rant!

I am a runner and a cyclist and as such YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU OWN LUCK/SAFETY when you run ON a road with vehicles.......two wheels versus 4 car/truck/tractor wheels...no contest serious failure...pain, death and grief...very simple..have a nice day!

My first thought was "..Walking his bicycle?... Most people I know walk their dogs, what an odd thing to do." Then I realised the story was written by a news24 journalist.

This is why I sold my road bike for a mountain bike.

      goldwright - 2012-09-02 10:29

Exactly, I used to ride on the roads, but don't anymore, mountain biking is far safer in comparisin in SA, plus you have the good scenery and the soul soothing peace of the countryside...... who hears of mtn bikers getting killed? Except colliding with wildlife at Albert Falls - and still surviving.......

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-09-02 10:31

So true Rags. Just gotta watch out for thoses zebra's.

Really sad. N12 is probably the only rd to cycle on out there. Maybe that's why so many okes are taking up mountain biking.

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-09-02 13:06

manduleli - do you know the road at all? guess not. the driver may have been at fault, but any sensible person would not be walking on that road, it is a very bad road, no lighting bad potholes and yes, idiots who overtake where you cant see ahead, But you can not blame the driver!
