Cyclist killed in Alberton

2012-02-28 20:17
Johannesburg - A cyclist was killed when a Toyota panel van knocked him over in Alrode, Alberton, on Tuesday afternoon, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

At 16:10, the 19-year-old man was struck on the corner of Langkloof and Old Vereeniging roads, Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said in a statement.

The cyclist was declared dead on the scene. The driver of the van was slightly injured, and said he would consult his own doctor.

"It is not clear at this stage what actually caused the accident, but the driver alleges that the cyclist crossed the roadway unsafely in front of his approaching Toyota before the crash," Mokheseng said.

The intersection was closed to traffic for two hours. A culpable homicide docket was opened.
