DA: Gauteng govt overspends on overheads

2011-06-20 12:37

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government should spend less on overheads and more on actions that benefit the public directly, the DA in the province said on Monday.

MPL Mike Moriarty said that according to an SA Institute of Race Relations survey, five provinces spent more than they were allocated for employees’ salaries.

"Gauteng overspent by the most, followed by Limpopo, the North West, the Eastern Cape, and the Northern Cape. Gauteng spent R33bn on personnel, which was 105% of the budget allocated for expenditure on employees and 53% of total expenditure.

"This survey proves that far too much money is spent on overhead activity and not enough money is spent on actions that serve the public directly," he said.

What's New!!! Couldn't care less for the people they are to serve, their pockets are the priority.

If they scrapped Affirmative Action they'd need about a tenth of the employees and therefore a tenth of the wage bill. Logic 101

      tseliso.molukanele - 2011-06-20 13:12

a tenth of the work force? correction: affirmative action doesn't say how big the work force should be, it just says how mixed it must be

      Valis - 2011-06-20 13:18

Nope, if they employed qualified people instead of cronies the wage bill would be a hundred times less, since a "cleaner" won't be earning 100k/month any more :P

      jds - 2011-06-20 13:32

uhm tseliso...I think he meant that because of affirmative action more people are needed to do the same amount of work. As true as this is, you do however get BEE employed personnel that are competent!

      Frungy - 2011-06-20 13:48

@ProudofPink - I'd prefer if they just got the same number of employees, but paid the same rate regardless of skin colour, and fired anyone who didn't do their job (again regardless of skin colour). @Tseliso.molukanele - Blacks with qualifications are extremely rare, despite this being 17 years after apartheid is over, when logically we should be seeing a MASSIVE increase in black graduates given the number of scholarships given to Black students. This shortage, combined with affirmative action, and in accordance with the laws of supply and demand, has resulted in black graduates receiving much higher salaries (current statistics suggest on average 1 1/2 to 2 times the rate a similarly qualified white graduate would receive). The pathetic thing is that these higher salaries are in no way connected to the value of their contributions or their effort in the workplace, and don't even buy loyalty, but instead black graduates stay in a new job for an average of 6 months before moving to a new job. Another interesting statistic is that for the first 6 months any new employee is on a sharp learning curve and is only at about 50% efficiency. ... what this means is that in terms of productivity black graduates are paid 400% what they're worth. Since that's my tax money I object most strenuously to Affirmative Action in the public sector.

      Mosele - 2011-06-20 14:05

@Frungy that is BS, hope u also have the stats that says that white people are paid 3 times more that their black counter parts doing the same job and with the same set of skills, In my experience I have seen more whites getting the jobs with less qualifications than the whites for the same job. Affirmative actions is there for a reason and the government is not implementing it properly because they look at the big companies especially the listed ones but if you knock on the doors of any company that is turning over less than R200MIL a year you can see that you find less blacks occupying the better positions and those companies combined contribute more to the economy than your big ones. Do proper exercises and studies around you and not only based on what the media says

      cliffarc - 2011-06-20 14:15

      - @ Mosele - Sure- That's because one white can do the work of three blacks.

      Mosele - 2011-06-20 14:42

@cliffarc I was actually having an intelligent conversation with @Frungy don't have time for time idiotic comments like yours if you cannot give me facts then press the mute button please

      ProudofPink - 2011-06-20 16:13

tseliso.molukanele - June 20, 2011 at 13:12 Report comment a tenth of the work force? correction: affirmative action doesn't say how big the work force should be, it just says how mixed it must be _____________ And therein lies the problem! It's all about skin colour rather than who is best qualified for the job. Even you could understand that if you tried hard enough.

      Totman - 2011-06-20 13:22

Good afternoon Tsepo. How are you today? Well?

      omrisho - 2011-06-20 13:23

Tshepo... a strong opposition party is what keeps a government on it's toes, therefore the opposition is a very necessary part of having a democracy, unless you believe the ruling party does not need to be kept tabs on, then you obviously do not stand for or believe in a democratic south africa... do you want a government that thinks it can do as it pleases unchecked? that is not a democratic party but a dictatorship and that never works out well in the long run, anyway, have a great day :)

      jds - 2011-06-20 13:33

      time to wake up tshepo...

      oh.wow - 2011-06-20 13:50

thob...you also need a wake up call. The DA is the ONLY party that actually does something good for the country.

      Citizen - 2011-06-20 13:52

  • RobertKay - 2011-06-20 13:10

Now that they have been re-elected, they can coast along for the next few years without worrying about the plight of the poor and needy.

      Citizen - 2011-06-20 13:55

Yeah they will carry on like this till come 2014, then they will start looking for open toilets again in Cape Town, only this time they won't be able to find any

  • santoro29 - 2011-06-20 13:56

Apparently JUJU wants to Nationalise the internet !!! @ Tsepho &Morentebo & Thobsion.anc --- you 3 clowns are so against the whites ,why don't you stop using the internet because the white man invented it ! From now on only use things that the Black man invented and stop bitching about the whites From your Boss

      Citizen - 2011-06-20 14:13

Yeah let me guess, the white man stole the internet from them, the bloody imperialists

  • indianchilli - 2011-06-20 14:15

Ummm...I don't know what's worse...a black government that has a lot more overheads but actually has a strong focus on racial transformation. Or a DA government that will put a bunch of white people instead, and pay lip service to racial transformation.

      santoro29 - 2011-06-20 14:22

zille has always been part of the struggle ! Look @ the Leon Schuster movie and see her reactions ! She's a true South African with awesome morals ,give her a chance ! Rather a white lady with morals than a black man (shower Head) without !

  • Wow! - 2011-06-20 14:18

"This survey proves that far too much money is spent on overhead activity and not enough money is spent on actions that serve the public directly," he said. This is exactly the problem. Look at all out reticulation networks - they are falling apart. Hell they cannot even repair the potholes or paint the lines on the roads. So we have engineers sitting on their butts NOT doing any work on road maintanance they end up doing nothing. When eventually they do get down to actually doing the work they are paid for - they will say they are too busy - doing what? (reading papers, drinking coffee and talking to their cronies). NOW they will have to employ yet another person to do the work. Bloody never ending circle of Incompetence.
