Johannesburg - The Gauteng government should use "sophisticated tracking technology" to locate fathers not paying child maintenance, the DA said on Thursday.

"Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must demonstrate her commitment to the future of children by implementing the highly successful strategy to bring defaulters to book pioneered by the DA-led Western Cape provincial government," Democratic Alliance gender spokesperson Patricia Mokgohlwa said.

On Thursday, The Cape Times reported that 83 fathers in the Western Cape had been arrested for not paying maintenance.

Head of the provincial justice department Hishaam Mohamed said the clampdown was intended to get non-payers to start taking responsibility for their children.

Mokgohlwa suggested using roadblocks, door-to-door searches and publishing fathers' names to catch defaulters.

"The provincial government must use every available resource to ensure that the children, and mostly women who care for them, receive the support that is their right," she said.
