Bloemfontein - Democratic Alliance MP Patricia Kopane has been elected as the party's Free State leader, it said on Sunday

"The DA Free State held a successful congress on Saturday; only one position was contested that of the deputy chairperson. The rest were uncontested. Kingsley Litabe has been elected as the new deputy chairperson," the party said in a statement.

Apart from Kopane and Litabe, Annelie Lotriet was elected chairperson, and David van Vuuren was financial chairperson.

On Saturday, Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille was named the Democratic Alliance’s Western Cape leader, after the party’s provincial vote saw her appointed to the post ahead of counterpart Lennit Max.

The results were read out at a packed His People’s Church in Goodwood, Cape Town, at 16:25, with just under a thousand people present at the venue, event organisers told News24.

The DA’s Greg Krumbrock stated that 30 400 entries were made, just before reading out the results of the elections for six different positions.

De Lille won the position of party provincial leader with 69% of the vote, to Max’s 31%.

The rest of the party’s provincial results in the province were as follows:

- Four additional members to Western Cape leadership: Dan Plato, Tijman van Essen, Christelle Vosloo, JP Smith

- Three deputy chairpersons: Grant Twigg, Memory Booysen, Albert Fritz

- Provincial chairperson of finance in the WC: Andricus van der Westhuizen

- Provincial deputy leader: Bonginkosi Madikizela

- Provincial chairperson (unopposed): Anton Bredell

Also on Saturday, Mmusi Maimane, after a week of speculation, accepted nomination to stand as the DA's leader, saying it is his chance to "restore hope" in the country's future.

"It has not been an easy decision," he said in a letter sent to the DA's public representatives on Saturday morning.

"I have thought long and hard about what it means for my young family. And I have had to consider whether the timing is right.

"In the end, I decided to accept this nomination because it is a unique opportunity to restore hope in the nation's future," he said.

The announcement comes a week after current party leader Helen Zille announced that she would not be standing for re-election as the party's leader.

At the time of the announcement Maimane was mum on whether he was considering standing for the position, but from the start there was speculation that he would be the frontrunner for the job.
