Cape Town - The DA has called on Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane to explain why 14 national water boards have not submitted their annual reports on time.

According to the Public Finance Management Act, all annual reports have to be tabled by 30 September, DA MP Nosimo Balindlela said in a statement on Thursday.

"The DA will request [the minister] to urgently write to the Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete to provide... reasons why 14 annual reports... were not tabled in Parliament by 30 September."

She said the boards were Botshelo, Bloem, Pelladrift, Namaqua, Amatola, Albany, Ikangala, Magalies, Lepelle, Mhlathuze, Sedibeng, Rand, Umgeni, and Bushbuckridge.

Balindlela said water boards were vital entities for the delivery of basic services.

If a written explanation was not forthcoming, she would ask the auditor general to issue a special report on the delay.
