DA welcomes Zuma 'Stop Rape' drive

Johannesburg - A campaign opposing sexual violence against woman and children, launched by President Jacob Zuma on Thursday, was welcomed by the DA.

"This is a welcome step towards addressing the scourge of rape and sexual violence in South Africa," DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said in a statement.

Zuma announced the campaign at Glendale Secondary School in Mitchell’s Plein, Cape Town, on Thursday morning.

Mazibuko said a national dialogue on the sexual violence "epidemic" was needed and she would approach Parliament about holding special public hearings across the country.

"I will be writing to all political parties represented in the National Assembly to request their support for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to enable this dialogue," she said.

This committee needed to be able to summon experts and reach as many people as possible.

"We need to have the difficult conversations that will enable us to seek and implement solutions to this crisis," Mazibuko said.
