Johannesburg - The former Jozi FM DJ on trial for his girlfriend's murder told the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, on Wednesday that she was partly to blame for her death.

"I did not commit a crime," said Donald Sebolai. "It was a mistake because we were struggling over the knife."

"So she is partly to blame for her death?" prosecutor Elize le Roux asked Sebolai.

"Yes," he replied confidently through an interpreter.

Sebolai faced a charge of murder, theft and defeating the ends of justice following the death of his girlfriend Dolly Tshabalala in June last year.

She bled to death on Sebolai's bed at his flat in Soweto after sustaining a stab wound from her pubic area to her thigh.

The steak knife punctured a vein and an artery.

Sebolai had previously testified that he and Tshabalala had been arguing after she accused him of cheating on her.

Discrepancies and contradictions

She died while Sebolai mopped her blood off the floor of his flat. He claimed to have not noticed the seriousness of her injury and had planned to take her to hospital once he was done.

He was arrested on July 8 2014, after allegedly being on the run for a week.

He claimed to have been heading to the police station to hand himself in when he was arrested.

But Le Roux argued that Sebolai had no intention of heading to the police station, because he believed it was Tshabalala's fault that she had died.

"I dispute and deny that," he said.

Sebolai left Tshabalala dead in his flat. He then fled the scene in her vehicle. Her bloody clothes and the murder weapon were in the car.

The vehicle was found dumped in an open area with all the contents inside.

Throughout Sebolai's cross-examination, discrepancies and contradictions between evidence he provided during his bail application and trial have been under the spotlight.

Sebolai has blamed shock and pressure for the contradictions. He claimed to have been ambushed into taking the stand during his bail application.

"That is why I fired my lawyer," Sebolai said.

The trial continues.
