Dad: I tossed baby to save her

2012-09-26 11:11

Johannesburg - The father of a 2-month-old girl who died of internal injuries in 2009 admitted, in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court, that he played a part in her death, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Shaun Bruckman, 46, pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide.

He and his former fiancee Rona van der Riet, 33, are accused of causing the death of their child Alexa in May 2009.

According to the newspaper, both have pleaded not guilty to murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and child abuse.

In an explanation of his plea, Bruckman said he got up early on 31 May 2009, to prepare a bottle for Alexa.

Beeld reported that he told the court he stood up from a mattress on the floor, with the baby in his arms, stumbled, and tossed the child back onto the mattress to avoid falling on her.

In the process, she hit a wall before falling on the mattress.

According to Bruckman, he went back to sleep as Alexa had no visible injuries.

Van der Riet woke him in the morning and told him the child was not breathing. The baby was rushed to hospital, but was declared dead.

The newspaper reported that Dr Hestelle Nel, who performed an post mortem on Alexa, testified that she had severe brain injuries, concurrent with hitting a heavy object, and rib fractures common in cases of child abuse.

I have never in my life heard such BS. If you fall with a child in your arms you turn your body so that you rather break something but they fall on you, I've had to do it as well, you don't throw the child against a wall so hard that she had bleeding! I hope they both get severe punishment, they hurt that poor baby on purpose, not accidental.

Agree 100%, my wife fell with our eldest when our daughter was a few months old from 2 steps, she turned around and took the full brunt of the fall to herself. That is parenting, not using an excuse that came from the last boy-scout, "An accident, you slipped, tripped and accidentally threw your baby against a wall". People that do this kind of thing, don't deserve to live.

Riette you are 100% right. I had so many stories of parents who protected their infants with their own bodies and lost their lives in the process but the child survives. One case where in Thailand where a building collapsed and the mother used her body to protect and her infant from being killed by stones and she curled her body in such a way that it protected her child. She did die but her baby survived, ONLY a parent can do this. Mxim this is not a parent.

@riette. My ex fell with our then baby son in his arms. He twisted and fell onto his elbow. How he never broke it I'll never know but the child was fine and dad walked around the shopping centre with tissue around his much bloodied arm. i see lots of stories like this in the comment section and I cannot believe that a judge will fall for this cr*p

      hayley.fredericks.9 - 2012-09-26 12:21

Are you mad? He must have thrown her pretty damn hard to cause severe brain injuries and cracked ribs!

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-09-26 12:38

If it was an accident, any decent human being would have taken the child to a hospital immediately to check for injuries. That same decent human being would never have fallen asleep after such an incident. The fact that he went back to sleep shows you that at least he should be guilty of culpable homicide. He should have been charged with murder at least.

Yes these two are guilty you dont need a court of law to tell you that.
