Pretoria - A Pretoria man has said that his father died a hero’s death after he was shot seven times by robbers through a closed door during a robbery at their Muldersdrift home.
After André Jordaan, 50, was shot when he kept getting up to protect his family against a gang of robbers, reported Beeld.
Jordaan died on Saturday in the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.
Shaun Jordaan, 26, said his father was shot while protecting his wife Isabel, 48, his other son Kevin, 23, and Kevin’s pregnant girlfriend Mariska, 24, and Shaun’s wife Jeanine, 23, from at least four robbers.
“My dad was a hero protecting all of us,” said Shaun. “That night he took the punch for all of us…”
On Thursday evening, as robbers were attacking the family, Shaun ran to the neighbours for help while his father and brother pushed the door shut from the inside to prevent the gang from getting to the family.
“I saw how my father-in-law fell down after the first shot but immediately got up again and kept stopping the men from coming into the room. He never went down…” said Jeanine.
Three men were arrested after the robbery and were apparently linked to about 14 other crimes.
Gauteng DA spokesperson for community safety Kate Lorimer said that Thursday's house robbery happened only three houses away from the scene of the robbery that left Botha dead.
She said that 93% of the households on the same street had been the target of house robberies, with residents of the area complaining of a "wild west" environment.
