Dad stabbed while defending baby

2012-08-19 14:31

Cape Town - A Cape Town photographer was stabbed five times while trying to hold off robbers who appeared to be after his baby, it was reported on Sunday.

Craig Kolesky, 37, told the Weekend Argus that three well-dressed men entered his Oranjezicht home through a bathroom window on the first floor at around 23:00 on Friday.

They went downstairs and found his mother-in-law sleeping in the lounge. She was stabbed three times in the arm while trying to hold off the attackers.

Kolesky heard the intruders and went to investigate while his girlfriend Yvushka Makein locked herself and the two-month-old baby into the nursery.

"I hid him between a toy box and his cot so they wouldn't get him immediately if they managed to break in," Makein told the paper.

The men returned upstairs to the nursery and tried to kick the door down.

Koleskythen attacked the men and was stabbed numerous times. He managed to escape and call for help.

The intruders fled without taking anything. No arrests had been made.

Sapa earlier incorrectly reported that Kolesky heard the intruders and locked himself and his 2-month-old baby inside the nursery.

@Desilusionada -- Wow, seriously? What an incredibly asinine, yet sadly typical, observation.

And they say guns aren't necessary in South African society...If the father had a firearm he would have had been able to defend his family without getting stabbed in the process

      rbphiri - 2012-08-19 16:30

Guns are necessary! and most of all a new party in leadership too, I'm tired of the current leadersh*t

although this story had positive outcome i hate that it happened in first place

      Hugh - 2012-08-19 15:13

Amazingly uninformed comment no matter how it is meant. There are no positives outcomes. In my case 12 years it has cost everything I have to remain functional even then I have lost a house, cars and almost a marriage. If I had of died my family would have had all that was lost and more

      michael.i.wright - 2012-08-19 15:37

A positive outcome would have happened if the headline read, "Homeowner guns down three attackers".

  • sandy.m.roman2 - 2012-08-19 15:45

Very brave dad indeed. Well done! But this should never have happened. We should be safe in our own homes.

the "accompanying photo" is SOOOOOO PATHETIC. It is clearly a symptom of a sick society with sick reporters if you have to try and glamorize attempted murder by posting an "acted" photo. What next- showing us open knifewounds for kicks?

      Mel de Wit - 2012-08-20 10:21

the 'blood' on that knife is so clearly ketchup......

  • wesleywt - 2012-08-19 18:07

Will there ever be a news article on a tragedy not followed by comments from morons who hate SA? We are in a period of transition, this to be expected. But this is not a typical crime, it seems to an attempted kidnapping. Most of these crimes are committed by people known to the family.

      patrick.mettle.7 - 2012-08-20 08:51

Period of transition so expect and accept crime? What a moron! When and where is crime justified against anyone? Perhaps you have low expectations of Africans and are trying to justify their actions? Shame, its been 18 years so a little murder, kidnapping and housebreaking is to be expected. They don't know better and they entitled to a few little posessions they didn't work for. Let's throw in the baby for good measure. Wish I could see you as I am sure you have a \moer\ me face. I would willingly oblige as I feel that during this transition phase, morons like you need to be enlightened.

  • tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-08-19 21:21

this is absurd, crime in this country is off the charts and government can only say its not as bad we make it out to be. We need stringent measures against criminals. I suggest shoot first and ask questions later.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-08-20 05:58

    When will this stop?

  • mimoons24 - 2012-08-20 08:38

every law abiding citizen should be armed and allowed to shoot to kill when in a situation like this..
