POLICE yesterday arrested a man for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl in the toilets of a busy Pietermaritzburg shopping centre.

It is believed that the incident occurred yesterday afternoon at the Capital Centre in Langalibalele Street.

According to a police source, who asked not to be named, it is believed that the man entered the toilet facilities after the little girl and raped her in one of the cubicles.

After the incident, the girl told her father and uncle who hunted the man down, and eventually caught up to him at the Imbali taxi rank.

According to the source, a confrontation ensued and upon hearing the crime the man had allegedly committed, passers-by mobbed together with the girl’s father and uncle wanting to attack the man.

Police arrived shortly after and had to pull the enraged crowd away from the alleged rapist.

The man was arrested and taken to the Pietermaritzburg police station.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
