Dad used Bible to justify sex with daughter

2012-09-19 09:26

Pretoria - An Mpumalanga father has been sentenced to life in prison without the option of parole for raping his daughter from the age of 13 and conceiving three children with her.

Andries Sibiya even went so far as to pay his wife lobola to be able to live with his daughter as his wife, reported Beeld.

He used the Bible and selected pieces of the Old Testament to justify his actions and to intimidate his daughter and wife into submission, said the regional magistrate in sentencing.

Sibiya was known as the wheelchair rapist as he insisted on appearing in court in a wheelchair, even though he was able to walk.

Sibiya was described by the court as a domineering person who manipulated his family and instilled fear in them and over a period of 9 years had sex with his daughter two to three times a week.

He was found guilty on 9 charges of rape but could have been found guilty of hundreds of charges of rapes, said the magistrate.

The wife should be in jail as well.

      mike.bundy.73 - 2012-09-19 16:45

And in 9 years none of their friends, neighbours, priests etc wondered who kept making the teenager pregnant? A lot of people kept quiet about this one for a long time.

All pedos use manipulation and threats. This guy just happened to abuse the Bible to abuse his daughter. This has nothing to do with faith. He may as well have used the constitution.. or a knife... he is evil.

Don't ever misuse and abuse the bible, In order to tarnish the image of christianity.Unfortunately we are sharing the same oxgen with this extreme monster.

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-09-19 09:59

He used the bible as it was given to him for nothing. If other religious books where so easily available he would have been using them.

      BalthazarZaishen - 2012-09-19 10:05

Gieljam, You've stated it perfectly, so then what common factor can we determine from religions? :)

      goyougoodthing - 2012-09-19 10:14

if you think the xtians religion is not tarnished by hundreds of years of abuse, slavery, wars, oppression, murder and injustice...

      Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-19 10:28

Mamaboy-Those are not real christians who did that,But atheists in order to drug christianity into mud and humiliation.

      BalthazarZaishen - 2012-09-19 10:30

Xtians are completely capable of doing that by themselves, atheists just like pointing it out. :)

      phillip.hoffman.7146 - 2012-09-19 10:40

Meme, you keep talking about the crusades. Nothing that is said or done now will correct that. Some people learn from their mistakes. Yes the crusades happened and are part of history the same ats Lenin, Stalin Pol pot etc. This man does not deserve protection but the full wrath of the law. He chose to use the Bible for ulterior motives,as have others in the past and will happen in the future. Just the same as it is the driver of a car that decides where and how fast it goes.

      Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-19 10:40

Baltharzar-You and your family need to set yourselves from this bondage of Atheism.Yes! really you can do that.

      BalthazarZaishen - 2012-09-19 10:45

Harold, I don't see what your statement has to do with the discussion up to this point. Also, you seem to misunderstand. Atheism isn't bondage, its freedom from the supposed totalitarian celestial dictatorship you wish to prostate yourself in front of. Who but a slave would wish for such a thing?

      Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-19 11:02

Beltharzar-Atheism is rebellion, blasphemy which comes with reluctance to obey Him.

      jannie.beirowski - 2012-09-19 11:08

Christianity has no guilt for the actions of man. It remains a personal decision by each person and the weaklings who are not willing to accept responsibilty for their actions blame it on christianity, because christianity cannot retaliate. Any excuse that cannot defend itself would have been used as they just do not want to admit it was a private decision to do whatever they blame christianity for.

      BalthazarZaishen - 2012-09-19 11:11

I don't need to rebel, I'm not a slave. And I'm not really partial to the idea of living in servitude of someone who's existence cannot even be verified.

      Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-19 11:19

Blatharzar-No need to verify His exisistence bcoz He does.

      BalthazarZaishen - 2012-09-19 11:26

Do you have evidence to support that stament?

      goldd.goldfinger - 2012-09-19 12:04

Its time for all those practising religion to look at themselves as well cause i hold them equaly responsible. Everyone always blames the fanatics but I think the so called religiously moderate allow the fanatics to take over and before you know it they are in tow. for example the mother supposedly allowed this behaviour because of the bible otherwise why would she, So the problem is the Bible and its verses in addition to this manipulative rapist.

      phillip.hoffman.7146 - 2012-09-19 12:21

Meme I read Inquisition and understood crusades. Let me explain my point. Everything you mentioned in your post at 10:20 is history. It happened in the past Just as did the atrocities under the communist rulers, who killed more people in persuit of their ideals. Slavery was wrong and it has been corrected partly as a result of the activities of Christians. My point is that you refer to Christian atrocities when far worse things were done under other leaders, yet you seem to ignore those. I am sure that you do not consider yourself responsible for things that your great grandfather did. So please do not try to hold current Christians accountable for things that happened hundreds of years ago in the name of Christianity.

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-09-20 07:57

LucidPreest, your view that Christians live in bondage of religion is laughable. Did you ever try having a relationship with the Lord before you chose to worship the devil? God does not impose Himself on anyone, you have to choose to accept Him. Once you do that then only can you testify to His existance. I cannot assume that you dont exist because i have never seen you in the flesh.

      althea.meintjies - 2012-09-20 15:14

@ Harold, this actually did happen in the bible, Lot's daughters gave him wine and slept with him, they both gave birth to their father's offspring. I don't condone this, but just that you should know that there is a similar incident in the bible

This is shocking. I wonder which scriptures was he quoting

  • amanda.p.barratt - 2012-09-19 10:14

here is plenty in the Bible to justify the subjugation of women; note just one: 'Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing. But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go' -Judges 19:24-25. It does not make what anyone does right - but perhaps people should be reading their ambiguous religious texts a bit more closely. If you are a religious fanatic or fundamentalist (which so many moderate Christians distance themselves from) it is easy to justify anything you do with the words of your God, with the primary result being one concealing their primal urges with a cultural phenomenon. Thank goodness we don't live in a theocracy, where the daughter would have been stoned or perhaps even made to legally marry him.

      andrew.alston.737 - 2012-09-19 15:33

Hi Amanda, I really wish people who quoted biblical text (irrespective of what they believe), would quote in context. Lets look at a bit of context surrounding those verses: 22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.” (Note the reference to wicked men) Note also that in Judges 20, because of what happened in Judges 19, a war was declared against those "wicked men" and they were wiped out. My point here is, yes, you can take any scripture, from any religion and twist it to say what you want and use it to justify your actions. This is not a problem with the scripture itself, it is a problem with the human mind that twists things and takes them out of context. Hell, I could find you things in psych text books when taken out of context that would promote some pretty sick things. I'm sick of people blaming religion (any religion) and scripture (any scripture) rather than being willing to blame those who would twist the words for their own sick means.

  • nerasmus1 - 2012-09-19 10:22

The Bible is an omnibus of folk tales, historical recollections and correspondence between spiritual leaders of the time. It should rather be considered as God's journal and not his codex. Just because the Bible says it's okay to commit incest (God knows where it says that anyway) doesn't make it right. God gave you common sense, use it that instead!

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-09-19 10:48

This common sense that he gave us is responsible for so many denominations and sects that we are today faced with religious intolerance and violence. Pull the other one.

It is quite likely that this dad deliberately used the ambiguity in the bible to justify his cravings. But should he have been given that opportunity in the first place? I have heard churches insist that violence on television hugely influences crime in our society. That may be correct. But they have to accept that many biblical scriptures are also outdated and may cause more harm than good in today's world. Radical muslims use the quran to justify their violence. Catholics and protestants always have a go at each other. I have seen comments from christians on this site, saying that other christians who interpret scriptures differently to them are not christians but satanic sects. Maybe the time has come to edit the so-called holy books and dispose of those unnecessary scriptures that incite violence, incest, killings, etc.

      Mbavhalelo - 2012-09-19 11:51

There is no scripture in de bible which instruct anyone to commit such aborminable acts. The incidents of incest, audultry, hormosexuality etc as recorded in de old testament are examples of de things dat God is opposed 2, Lot was made drunk by his daughters and they had sex with him but 2 show dat his daughters were acting immoraly. U cannot edit de bible as if is a text book. U need de Spirit of God 2 understand de bible, and u are not a christian just bcos u read de bible. No one can be a christian without de Spirit of Christ

Mbavhalelo, if what you say is true, then no one will ever convert to christianity. If you can only be a true christian to understand the bible, then how are non-believers supposed to read this so-called word of god and accept him? This is like chicken and egg all over again. The point is that this book is out there. As long as it is, then there is a danger that someone who does not understand it may kill or commit incest by it. Perhaps the bible needs to be banned then? Or come with warning signs like cigarette boxes?

      Hanjo.0 - 2012-09-20 09:12

@Mbavhalelo Gen 19: 36 - "Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father" Sarah was the wife of Abraham, as well as being his half-sister, the daughter of his father Terah (Genesis 20:12) Amram took to wife Jochabed his aunt by the father’s side [Exodus 6:19-20] he took hold of her, and said: Come lie with me, my sister. She answered him: Do not so, my brother, do not force me: for no such thing must be done in Israel. Do not thou this folly. [II Kings 13:8-12] But he would not hearken to her prayers, but being stronger overpowered her and lay with her. [II Kings 13:14] So I beg to differ, Incest seems quite common in the bible.
