Pretoria - A day mother appeared in the Pretoria district court on Wednesday on charges of child abuse and assault, according to a report on Thursday.

Linda Mans, 36, of the Teddy Winks nursery school in Suiderberg, was arrested on August 16, after allegedly assaulting two babies at the school in 2011, Beeld reported.

Mans allegedly beat an 8-month-old baby "repeatedly and hard" on the buttocks, legs, lower back and arms.

At the time, Mans told the baby's parents that one of her employees had "smacked the baby because she wouldn't sleep".

She is also charged with assaulting a 10-month-old boy, whose face was slapped.

Mans apologised in writing to the baby girl's parents for the marks left on his face by the slap, which she said was actually meant for her own child.

Magistrate Maryke de la Rey warned Mans about the seriousness of the charges, and told her she could be sent to jail for 10 years.
