Johannesburg - Former president FW de Klerk was discharged from hospital on Wednesday morning, after having a cardiac pacemaker fitted, the FW de Klerk Foundation said.

"The installation of the pacemaker yesterday [Tuesday] was a success," executive director Dave Steward said.

"He was discharged this morning. He is back home, and fit."

Steward said De Klerk was expected to be back at work before the end of the week.

The foundation thanked South Africans for their good wishes and messages of support.

The family was grateful for the "excellent medical team" at Panorama Hospital in Cape Town, where the 77-year-old was operated on.

The former head of state was last operated on in June 2006, when two malignant nodes were removed from his colon.

Shortly after the operation he developed a lung infection, but he made a full recovery.
