Johannesburg - Former president FW de Klerk's operation on Tuesday to have a cardiac pacemaker fitted was a success, the FW de Klerk Foundation said.

"Today's [Tuesday's] procedure of the implant of the dual chamber pacemaker was a success and Mr De Klerk is doing fine," the foundation said in a statement.

"As per standard practice with this procedure, Mr De Klerk will spend the night in hospital and will return home tomorrow."

The foundation thanked South Africans for their good wishes and messages of support, and said the family was also grateful for the "excellent medical team" at Panorama Hospital, in Cape Town where the 77-year-old was operated on.

On Tuesday, President Jacob Zuma wished De Klerk a speedy recovery.

"We wish the former president well during this difficult time. Let us keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers," Zuma said in a statement.

The former head of state was last operated on in June 2006, when two malignant nodes were removed from his colon.

Shortly after the operation he developed a lung infection, but he made a full recovery.
