Johannesburg - Four Baragwanath Hospital staff members have been suspended for leaving the body of an 18-year-old woman to decompose, the health department said on Thursday.

"This follows preliminary investigations around the transportation of the body from the ward to the mortuary and the manner in which it was kept," spokesperson Prince Hamnca said in a statement.

"The department has come to a conclusion that some officials have a case to answer."

The Sowetan reported on Thursday that Bacebile Mbete, 18, died at the hospital on Friday from complications due to an ectopic pregnancy.

Her grandfather Raymond Zikalala, 82, said her body was sent to the morgue on Monday, three days later. By that time it had decomposed so badly the young woman was unrecognisable.

The body was returned to the hospital as the undertaker said it was too decomposed to keep at the mortuary.

Hamnca said the department had in recent weeks acted swiftly against officials alleged to have contravened the public service code of conduct and brought the department into disrepute.

"Recently, a doctor was summarily dismissed for professional negligence," he said.

The four were suspended pending full investigations and disciplinary hearings.
