Dead baby found at Oprah school

2011-02-18 17:35

Johannesburg - The body of a new-born baby was found at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls after a 17-year-old gave birth to it on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

Police could not confirm if the baby had been murdered or died of natural causes, Captain Shado Mashobane said.

"Yes the girl gave birth to the baby at the school, but we can't confirm what happened to it. A case of concealment of death is being investigated," he said.

The 17-year-old girl, who was a pupil at the school just outside Johannesburg, was taken to the Midvaal Hospital in Meyerton.

Beeld newspaper on Friday reported that the baby's body was found in a plastic bag filled with bloodied clothes after the girl was taken to hospital.

Mashobane said he could not confirm the reports.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls could not be immediately reached for comment.

Excuse me ignorance.... Can someone tell me more about Oprahs School. Who is it for. Its aims, ambitions etc.. Why did she pick us and not, say, China

      Pat - 2011-02-19 18:16

If you would like to make a donation to support the girls at the Leadership Academy, please visit Opening the school in South Africa was only the beginning! You can help Oprah's Angel Network support education around the world. Please visit

      Alfred - 2011-02-19 18:48

Thanks Pat, but as tempted as I am I don't think I'm really in the market to support 17 year old mothers who put their dead babies in plastic bags at a school that doesn't accept boys or whites.

      Heks - 2011-02-19 19:02

Pat..... How much have you given. If my memory serves me correct. this school has been in the news before (not positive). Sorry mate I have other things to spend my money on!!!!!

      Derek - 2011-02-21 01:59

Pat - The Oprah Angel network is no longer operating and is not accepting donations. Oprah is done with that project.

      Pat - 2011-02-21 11:23

Derek - Thanks for the update, you are correct that the Angel Network no longer accepts donations, I ran through the Oprah site and there is a notice to this effect.

Oprah needs to supply these girls with chastity belts. Very progressive!!

      Badnews - 2011-02-19 17:38

that would not work, even cars with immobilisers and tracking systems disappear, chastity belts would not even keep a python out, never mind a trouser snake.

This is so embarassing the press is going to have a field day with ths.

      FFS - 2011-02-18 18:35

Local media only. Nothing in the international media about it. It's just not PC to show what a scam the whole Oprah facade is.

      Penelope - 2011-02-18 21:06

I'm in California and heard about it.

      Maddy-CT - 2011-02-19 13:00

@fanatictwo. What has the DA got to do with it? - stupid comment! In fact Helen Zille has said that young girls should be given incentives not to fall pregnant, for example a bursary to pay for tertiary education if they reach and pass Matric without falling pregnant. What does the ANC do about teenage pregnancies? - they give child support grants which serve as an encouragement. Teenage pregnancy is a real problem and leads to the perpetuation of the cycle of poverty and dependence.

      goyougoodthing - 2011-02-19 13:49

FFS so with you. Oprah is a scam artist the same as Obama.

      Sabsi - 2011-02-18 23:35

I actually wonder how 'dad' 'did it'?! ...unless he's part of the security guys?! This school is secured like an American Embassy and you can't just walk in and out! I feel very sorry for the girl!!

      Warren - 2011-02-19 11:55

I feel sorry for the baby, & I hope this story does'nt get worse!

      Mordred - 2011-02-19 13:04

@ Fanatictwo - why feel sorry for her and that she had no one to talk to? She knew what she was doing when she had sex and she certainly knew the ropes about what to do with the baby as this is a common occurrence about 100 times a day in the black community. I also can't see Oprah not having councillors at the school. The truth is that the girl was just too damned scared of losing her place in the school. The only person who has my sympathy is the little soul that was sacrificed who is now with the Lord.

      Heks - 2011-02-19 19:05

Sabsi. Don't feel sorry for the girl. If she is old enough to have sex, she must know what COULD happen.

  • Lindani Selby - 2011-02-18 18:13

    This is outright humiliating!!!

  • johnbradfield27 - 2011-02-18 18:15

Oh,Oh! This is not going to be well received in the international media. Best thing Oprah can do is to close this sucker down. Now.

  • Vaal Donkie - 2011-02-18 18:18

I see no one mentions that Oprah herself lost a baby at 14 and that she was "relieved".

  • Irene - 2011-02-18 18:39

at least she tried to give some girls a chance, the fact some blew the opportunity is not Oprah's fault. you can take a horse to the water but you can't make it drink, what a pity this sad thing happened and surely someone was aware the young girl was expecting an infant and she have got counseling, a lost opportunity to achieve her dreams of a bright future. kitten

      jevoixtout - 2011-02-18 19:26

Agree with you Irene. This is sad. And the real victim here is the baby which the reporter refers to as "it". From what I have read these kids get chucked out of the school if they becoming pregnant so I would suggest the rigid laws of the school promted concealment by the mother which led to this tragedy.

      defacto - 2011-02-20 00:34

@jevoixtout_ The 'Rigid Rules'of the school are not to blame for low moral standards_ This behavior is a Social norm for for these 'People'

  • Mlu - 2011-02-18 18:39

But you can't blame Oprah for the pregnancy and the dead baby. There is also no reason for the school to shut down. The problem of teenage pregnancies in nation-wide because generally parenting standards have gone down.

      wipi1 - 2011-02-18 19:28

sad sad look at it from your point of view !!! is it not that there is a lack of respect in every concievable way by these students? the whole matter has been a joke from the get go!!!!! the lack of respect for life by this girl and yes she should do time in what ever way possible. this will only blow over and no result. how and where did she fall pregnant and no one saw this coming at the school. utter crap i say and where is Oprah in this where is her comment where is her defense of a student that showed total respect for life? her dream yet it is going to ruins.

  • Firebird - 2011-02-18 18:40

Oh and Oprah had so much to do with it????

  • Expat - 2011-02-18 18:43

  • Amelia - 2011-02-18 19:28

This things happen worls wide! But wen its about Africa evryone goes nuts about it! Its sad yes that the mother of this babe could not enjoy the enormous gift .oprah as given her,now y must the sckool close down, one rotten apple dont make the world rotten! and one more thing,,,accidents do happen,so come on all dont just point fingers becouse its in AFRICA! WELL DONE OPRAH 4 THE HELP AND POSSITIVE VIEW IN SOUTH AFRICA!

      Gatta - 2011-02-19 20:30

  • wipi1 - 2011-02-18 19:33

@mlu- you are a sad sorry state. no one at the school saw this coming? absolutely no-one. what you forget while you defend oprah is this girls lack of respect for life!!!! to discard a life just like that!!! oh and before you get upset I was given up for adoption, and in all fairness do you not think that oprah could not have phoned one of her many guest celebrities and made a plan to adopt her out to a family that has respect for life? traitor!!!!!

  • Zubair - 2011-02-18 19:46

dnt stress..oprah will turn this into a marketting spin...lets...the show will be about a depreived individual, that was most probably "raped"..but in actual fact new exactly what she as doing, then ofcos the girl was un-educated, and lets not forget the girl has not heard of AIDS orany STD, and we might as well throw in the brutal headmistress... hmm. wonder...oprah sitting on the couch on national televsion and well lets not forget the tears.... what a spin....oprah wins...

      exocist - 2011-02-19 19:09

  • fanatictwo - 2011-02-18 19:53

if oprah is so into africa why did she not choose to build the school in a town run by the anc? i feel sorry for the mother and would have thought that oprah of all ppl would have had councilors ready to help these girls, no matter what.

      Janine - 2011-02-18 20:45

I take it that you are voting ANC and going to heaven? The reason that she chose to situate the school in a DA run area is because then she stood a chance of things actually working.

  • Ponatshego - 2011-02-18 19:58

I share mlu sentiments on this matter.parental responsibility has taken a knock ,we are not taking care of our children any more, why didn't she confide with her mom or why the mom couldn't notice that.girls cannot even trust their own mothers this days or else we are pressurizing our children unreasonably.when a child to that ,means she had no one to talk to,Winfrey or the school cannot be blame for this unless such a person has a problem with good work done by that school or else competition is a problem.

  • michal.mierzwa - 2011-02-18 20:08

It doesn't matter what school your children go to... they still can and will get pregnant! Regardless how much money you decided to spend on the education.

      Gatta - 2011-02-19 20:34

My daughter WILL NOT get pregnant if she keeps her panties up. They get pregnant because of the decline in moral values.

      drewster - 2011-02-19 21:00

Not one girls fell pregnant when I was in school (matric 93'). We went to school to get the best marks we could so we could get the best careers we could. Can someone tell me what is different in these two cases?

  • magogodlams - 2011-02-18 20:13

Come on guys stop shifting the blame this are our kids, it should be our problem not Oprah’s she did her best, she built the school as a foundation for education now she must teach your kids morals and how to behave, where’s our contribution in this, all we know is to wait for a disaster to happen, we complain about everything

  • Krush - 2011-02-18 20:59

How didn't anyone know she was pregnant?

  • - 2011-02-19 05:42

What a poorly written article, I didn't realise that News24 was bought by the Daily Sun.

  • Worldwise - 2011-02-19 08:30

Oprah is racist and sexist. She has an open hatred for males and non blacks. Don't believe me? Then why is the school only for black female children? Please don't tell me that at least black male children don't have similar problems. But Oprah would never look after any male.

      Ilumiae - 2011-02-19 12:51

Actually she decided not to give black inner city kids anything because all they "wanted" was rims and tims (supposedly). But then she spoils undeserving middle class American white women on her shows with free giveaways worth hundreds of dollars, more than the Ipod some poor kid may want as a toy. Yes, how dare black children want any more than the bare minimum essentials in life. Oprah is "totally" looking out for black people [/sarcasm]. She's only doing this because Africans have a nicer reputation than American blacks. The irony is that she said during the 1980's: “I wasn’t a dashiki kind of woman … Excellence was the best deterrent to racism and that became my philosophy.” as if people who like dashikis couldn't possibly be striving for excellence. White children don't have to be "excellent" in order to achieve in American society. They inherit wealth from their parents through housing equity blacks are barred from because racists won't give them anything beyond sub prime loans. So they get the best tutors, or they can pay their way into college (especially if they're in private schools). White children are conditioned to see education as a chore, and not as a wholesome experience. People who are too smart are considered "nerds", or "stoic" or "unemotional". Just look at the stereotypes they have for Asians. But blacks are expected to be "equal" by being "excellent". Something they don't aspire for. Implying there is a racial system. Good job Oprah. Good job!!!

      Maddy-CT - 2011-02-19 13:21

@ worldwise. I think your comment is unfair. I do not know much about Oprah, but I have never perceived her to be racist or sexist. The school is not only for black children but for all disadvantaged children irrespective of race. As far as I know the only entrance criteria is potential leadership skills and academic ability, and that there are non-black children in the school. The black children are in the majority because that reflects the demographics and sociological reality of our country. I doubt that her decision to open a school for female children had anything to do with a hatred for males.

      H. Claire Scheepers - 2011-04-02 14:23

No Dear.. males don't HAVE similar problems they CAUSE them...

Nice leadership school it must be with a 17 year old pregnant.

  • pawsaw - 2011-02-19 13:59

This girl was probably impregnated while on holiday and hid the fact to avoid expulsion. Believe me these girls come from homes where an uncle or a male cousin share the house with them and are raped and impregnated by family. I saved a 14 year old years ago and had her child adopted so that she got a 2nd chance. To this day the only ome who knows who the father is is the girl and she is too afraid to talk. How does she tell her aunt that her brother did this to her in his wife's absence and risk being thrown into the street? Young females are the property of the males of the mother's family if she is deceased, together with their sexuality under African Law. They have to babysit and do what they are told. When they fall pregnant the blame is placed squarely on the 13 yr old and she is thrown out by the male of the house. In this instance there were two single uncles and a 19 year old son and cousin sharing the house with the 13 year old girl. She fingered the 19 year old who was beaten up by his father and ran away but the girl was 6 months already so no abortion and also no prosecution of the perpetrator because it would have prevented adoption.

      Xeva - 2011-02-19 14:59

so true,I mean, there is no mention of the person who impregnated her, everyone is making out as if the 17 year old child must bear sole responsibility for her getting pregnant

      Maddy-CT - 2011-02-19 17:29

You have related the story of an individual girl, horrific as it was, but you are generalising when you state "these girls come from homes..". Please, we should not rush to judgement or make assumptions when we do not know the true circumstances of a particular case, which has been badly reported in any event.
